Wireless technology has increased our connections with one another -- and, with the omnipresence of buzzing cell phones, our distractibility. But what if wireless technology could help tone down the distractions? With Bluetooth-based wireless personal area networks (WPANs) and social networking technology like the Serendipity server, it's possible.

Mobile phones provide great accessibility and flexibility; no longer are people confined to one location for conversation over a fixed line. Such flexibility comes, inevitably, at the cost of increased interruptions and interaction demands. For example, when a mobile phone rings, it may disrupt group activities such as classes, meetings, or movies. Generally, this interrupt occurs because the user forgets to update his mobile phone configuration as appropriate to the current situation. Interruptions caused by inappropriate notification, such as ringing in a meeting, can cause inconveniences, disruption, and embarrassment for the owner.

In this article, discover a solution that can update your mobile phone profile according to the context. This is achieved using Bluetooth and the Serendipity server. The first two sections provide you with background information for these two technologies. The third section contains an example of this technology in action, along with a flowchart and detailed explanation.
