Call for Artists: New Photography - Seeing Through the Socio-Anthropological Lens

now until January 25, 2009 // AccessArts Publications Ltd. // Lefkosia, Cyprus

ARTERI calls for contributions to a special upcoming photography issue: Fine art photographers and art/photography writers working within the title theme are invited to submit material/ articles for possible publication. The issue was initiated and will be curated/co-edited by Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert. Theme: ARTERI 9 will be dedicated to contemporary Cypriot photography influenced by anthropological or sociological concepts/ways of seeing reality. We are interested in artists who explore individual and group identities, people’s environments and their rituals, in a new way.

Contemporary documentary photography has moved away from the traditional black and white images associated with photographers like Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange and Henri Cartier Bresson. Contemporary photographers embrace a variety of subject matters, and thus transcend tightly predetermined photographic genre definitions. Anthropological, sociological or cultural concepts such as identity, transition and change, culture, power, gender and class, preoccupies the work of a number of influential contemporary photographers. See for example the work of Martin Parr, Rineke Dijkstra, Nikki S. Lee, Gillian Wearing, Tina Barney, Jacqueline Hassink, Thomas Struth and Richard Renaldi.
