The 14th annual ART SALON AT THE BAY, curated by Cape Town art consultant, Rose Korber promises to live up to the high reputation of its previous incarnations. The exhibition opens this year on the 23 December 2005 and runs until 12 January 2006 in the newly refurbished display area at the Bay Hotel, Victoria Road, Camps Bay, Cape Town. The Salon aims to present a varied and comprehensive overview of the current state of South African art. Featured artists include William Kentridge, Willie Bester, Sam Nhlengethwa, David Koloane, Conrad Botes, Colbert Mashile, Johann Louw, Robert Slingsby, Deborah Bell, Claudette Schreuders and Stephen Inggs.

Since its inception in 1992, the Art Salon has been a major enterprise, bringing together, under one roof, a large showcase of quality artworks, in various styles and media. This year's Salon sees a subtle shift towards more cutting-edge work, while still maintaining its backbone of 'classics', such as John Kramer, Erik Laubscher, Peter Bonney and Walter Meyer.

As well as the traditional genres of landscape and figurative painting, the Salon also features examples of some of the best sculpture and ceramics that include a remarkable triptych of figurative works in mild steel by Jaco Sieberhagen, a bronze horse and rider by Wilma Cruise and a powerful combination of a ‘ship/woman’ in ironwood, by Shepherd Ndodzu.

In keeping with the current trend towards the Contemporary, younger artists, such as Peter Eastman, John Murray, Trasi Henen, Ruan Hoffmann, Alastair Whitton, Francois van Reenen and Daniel Halter are well represented. In the photography section, leading South African photographers, David Goldblatt and Stephen Inggs, will be on view.

The top ceramic artists on this year's Art Salon include Barbara Jackson, Louise Gelderblom, Hennie Meyer, Heather Mills, Helen Vaughan, Wendy McLaghlan and Shirley Fintz.

According to Korber; 'This year's Salon is ‘leaner’ and more focused towards the demands of the contemporary collector and the newly refurbished display area at The Bay Hotel will enable the fine quality art to be shown at its very best.
