This is the first instalment of an ongoing project exploring memory and perception in the age of ones and zeros. Over the next few months, new remixes of the Sara and Jessica story will premiere. "There is an abc-ignorance that precedes knowledge, and there is another learned ignorance that comes after and that is created through 'knowing' and that will equally like the first be annihilated and annulled by knowledge."
Michel de Montaigne [1]
Initiated in 1994, the Curatorial Programme of de Appel arts centre aims to offer young curators a condensed package of experiences and skills that can be seen as instruments to enhance the development of their professional career.
The curriculum revolves around theoretical issues in regular sessions with a tutorial team consisting of Floris Alkemade (architect,NL), Liesbeth Bik (visual artist, NL), Ann Demeester (director de Appel arts centre, BE/NL), Charles Esche (director Van Abbe Museum, UK/NL), Annie Fletcher (curator, IR/NL), Elena Filipovic (curator/writer, US/BE), Ann Goldstein (director Stedelijk museum), Henk Slager (philosopher/curator, NL), Lisette Smits (independent researcher/curator, NL), Jan Verwoert (art critic, DE)
The eight-month long Curatorial Programme exists in its current form since 2006, with a reshaped curriculum and an extended tutorial team. It encompasses a dense array of seminars, workshops, excursions (including a three-week research trip to a destination outside Western Europe), practice-related assignments and encounters with artists and art professionals.
de Appel arts centre offers :
- The opportunity to get acquainted with de Appel arts centre from 'the inside', and get a better insight into the mechanisms and governing principles of a contemporary institution for visual arts.
- The possibility to make a research trip outside of Western Europe and a minimum of 5 field trips, within Europe.
- The opportunity to meet and have an exchange with a large number of artists, curators, critics and other international professionals through thematic seminars and informal encounters. Guest teachers over the past years have been e.g. Claire Bishop, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Gerardo Mosquera, Paul O'Neill, Paulo Herkenhoff, Jacques Rancière, Simon Sheikh, Pier Luigi Tazzi, Jan Hoet, Teresa Gleadowe, Tirdad Zolghadr, Ulay and Nina Möntmann.
The program pays attention to the history of exhibition-making, diverse curatorial practices, institution building and project management. The programme is characterized by a specific focus on 'curating in the expanded field', which is investigated through the polarity between 'free-lance' and 'institutional' curating and the notion 'context-responsive' curating.
Application Requirements :
1. A letter of motivation in which you state your personal drive as well as your expectations of the programme.
2. A proposal for a project (maximum 4000 words, approx 8 pages A4) including: concept and location of the project (main focus, explanation of context and relevance), the participating artists (including some image material), a realistic budget, a publicity plan (not obliged).
3. A CV, including an extensive description of your relevant working experience
4. Two written references of (former) tutors, professors or employers, in English.
On the basis of the submitted documents twelve candidates will be short-listed. These candidates will be invited to come to Amsterdam in the second week of March for an interview with an international jury, who will select the final six participants of the Curatorial Programme 2012/2013.

ARTICULE (Montreal) presents Mona Sharma "The Loss and Reclamation of Faith"
December 9, 2011 until January 22, 2012 // opening hours : Wed - Sun 12 h - 17 h // ARTICULE // Montreal, Canada

Joan Jonas : Volcano Saga +Drawing Languages (Wilkinson Gallery, London)
Joan Jonas // Volcano Saga, Installation, Queens Museum of Art
Queens, New York, 2003-04 // photo : Ari Hiroshige
October 10 until November 20, 2011 // opening reception : Saturday October, 15 // 18h until 21h // Wilkinson Gallery // London, UK
Wilkinson Gallery launches two concurrent exhibitions with the internationally acclaimed artist, Joan Jonas. In the Lower Gallery, Jonas will present Volcano Saga, 1985/1994, one of the most important installations existing from the artist’s oeuvre.
"I see Volcano Saga as the beginning of my synthesizing the development of female character, the story as mirror, and the volcanic landscapes as representation of narrative. Here, Iceland, was the connection of the psyche to the elements. As in “Wind”, the elements become character. I chose as my story the 13 th Century “Laxdaela Saga”. This story is about a woman who married four times. The book begins with a historical account, tracing the characters’ ancestry, then continues with the woman, Gundrun, who tells four dreams to a seer who then interprets the dreams. The second part of the saga involves the actual marriages and the carrying out of the prophecy. A film crew recorded the landscapes on video. I photographed it, and on returning to New York, I developed a solo performance with video and slide projections of the different mostly volcanic landscapes that for me represented parts of the story – the four dreams. I finally turned the live performance into a 30-minute narrative for television broadcast, with Tilda Swinton playing Gundrun and Ron Vawter playing the seer Gest. I developed a way of telling the story in video with the foreground shot in the studio against the Icelandtic landscapes as backdrops. Gundrun tells her dreams to Gest as they sit together in the hot springs – a beautiful blue lagoon with wond, mist, and black volcano rock. Sitting in the steamy blue made the relationship of the characters in the story erotic. I liked this added level of closeness in relation to our own ideas about how and when we tell our dreams to others, and how they are interpreted. To frame the story in the present I began the tape by telling my story of an accident that actually happened, in which my car was blown off the road by the wind. Otherwise I played a small part. The tape ended with an old couple talking about how the fishing net was invented. By a woman, probably, they say."

Yancey Richardson Gallery : Hellen van Meene
Until October 22, 2011 The Yancey Richardson Gallery presents an exhibition of new work by Hellen van Meene, continuing the artist's decades-long exploration into photographic portraiture. The exhibition includes several new portraits of adolescent girls, each one characterized by the artist's extraordinary use of light and elicitation of her subject ' s psychological state. Notably, the selection also includes a series of formal portraits of dogs, a distinctly new direction within the artist 's oeuvre. This is van Meene' s third solo exhibition at the gallery.
The intimately scaled female portraits in the exhibition were all shot in Russia and in the artist's hometown of Heiloo, The Netherlands. Characteristic of van Meene' s style, the portraits reflect an introspective mood, unveiling a moment of acute psychological poignancy. In Untitled, St. Petersburg (above), van Meene has returned to a model she previously photographed, whom the artist met in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2007. Formerly a girl in the midst of awkward adolescence, she appears now both physically and psychologically exposed as a nude young woman, bright red lipstick and black wig her only staged adornment. Directly engaging the viewer, the model's coolly blank expression and brilliant blue eyes offer an intriguing glimpse into her psyche.
