PREVIEW BERLIN – The Emerging Art Fair 2011
Following the turbulent developments of Berlin’s art fair landscape in 2011, and even in its proverbial “perilous” seventh year, PREVIEW BERLIN – The Emerging Art Fair is looking forward to an internationally oriented group of exhibitors that follow the “emerging” principle, promising an exciting art fair for all those seeking new discoveries in the contemporary art scene.
From September 9 to 11, an upcoming generation of galleries and project spaces from 15 nations will present the most ambitious positions of their programmes in Hangar2 of the former Tempelhof Airport. In addition to the 61 exhibitor concepts, the runway has been cleared for two new projects this year. With VIDEO ART BOX by Fresh Paint and FOCUS ACADEMY, the focus of the exhibition discourse has been placed squarely on the interface between art production and the art market.

VIDEO ART BOX by Fresh Paint presents contemporary video art from Israel and marks the beginning of a partnership between PREVIEW BERLIN and FRESH PAINT Tel Aviv – two art fairs that have dedicated themselves to emerging art. The programme presents video art that has never been shown in Germany before, and provides insights into a wide-ranging and internationally acclaimed Israeli video art scene with its characteristic evocative and low budget works.
In a panel discussion between the directors of the PREVIEW BERLIN and FRESH PAINT, the potential for cooperation between the two art fairs, the similarities and differences of the event concepts and their effects on each local art scene will be debated.
The project has been conceived and realised in cooperation with schir – art concepts, Berlin.
FOCUS ACADEMY
With FOCUS ACADEMY, PREVIEW BERLIN is turning toward art academies and their students in a new format. Developed from the enhancement of PREVIEW BERLIN’s art fair concept, FOCUS ACADEMY centres directly on students at the moment of their transition from training to artistic independence, leading to a platform for a new generation of young and promising artists who present their work for the first time to a broad public.
In 2011, this concept, which pushes the new artistic generation to the next level – in line with PREVIEW BERLIN’s profile as an interface between artists and the art market – will be expanded for the first time to include several universities. In its next editions, PREVIEW BERLIN will develop a platform in which the art university students and exhibition spaces will be able to compare their state of production, education and mediation with that of other art academies. This platform will also enable them to make new contacts or refresh existing cooperations.
The PREVIEW BERLIN 2011 includes work by students of the Bauhaus University in Weimar, the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg presented at the stands of marke.6, Umtrieb – Galerie für aktuelle Kunst and MyVisit.to.

The Real Frequency continues to drop gems repping musical talents from Torontot, Canada. We’ve already seen some of what's to offer with previous singles from their new album, The New North, and the quality keeps coming with another single, "Change," this one courtesy JD Era, also recently anointed as the newest artist signed to Raekwon's Ice H20 label. In the coming weeks, The Real Frequency and JD Era will also release a video for the single.
The track, which also features LOKZ, is easily one of the smoother songs on the compilation album, a fact that, according to JD Era, compliments and plays up the power of the song's the message. "Change" was inspired by the title of The Real Frequency's project The New North," explains Era, adding that he feels the "album symbolizes a changing of the guard, a passing of the torch to those next up from Toronto." JD’s laidback flow is framed by bouncing percussion, clean guitar, and fluid piano licks courtesy of producer Soundsmith and complimented by LOKZ's effortlessly soulful vocals.

Blessed Feathers is a duo based out of Milwaukee, WI. With only a month until the release of their new LP, Blessed Feathers drops the second single from the record, entitled "Stinging Nettle, Honeysuckle." Much like "By Song Through the Americas" was a song of travel and an ode to summer's end, "Stinging Nettle, Honeysuckle" is a bitter reminder of winter's immediacy in the Midwest.

Gowanus fuzz-rock duo Lightouts announces the release of their latest single, "The Eloise Suite." The song is about the balance of want versus need. Originally titled "Dit-Dat," The band decided to change the title a few months ago after Charlie Sheen had his infamous breakdown in the Eloise Suite of New York’s Plaza Hotel. "Someday," claims guitarist Gavin Rhodes "we hope to participate in a more good-natured trashing of the famous pink hotel room."
The first b-side is "Dress Shop," the second b-side is a cover of two songs in one- a mix of LCD Soundsystem’s "All I Want" and David Bowie’s classic "Heroes." The artwork for the single was by George Boorujy from a piece of his called Rookery. Mixing and mastering was done by the incomparable Andy Altmann.

Don-Ray is the producer behind the likes of Lady Alma as well as the abstract remixer for Fertile Ground and Wunmi; among others. He's recorded for several labels including Marauder, Madacy, UJammin, Gotsoul, and Sony Music taking them to new heights with his deep-jazz and future funk productions. He's worked with world renown producers such as Danial Lanois, was credited as having one of the Best Albums of 2005 by Freefall Radio on KUSF, and was nominated for Best Electronic Album at the Canadian Urban Music Awards in 2001.
His music has been on albums with other notable artists including Roy Ayers, Roni Sze, DKD, Henrik Schwarz, Jerome Sydenham, Mr. V, Pal Joey, Dennis Ferrer, Glen Underground, Thievery Corporation, Mateo & Matos, Tortured Soul, and Osunlade.

Fresh off a cross-country U.S. tour with Avi Buffalo, Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist, Nik Freitas, premiered a new video last week for the title track off his new album, Saturday Night Underwater. The video features Freitas, a former photographer for Thrasher Magazine, showing off his skate skills and his painting skills, spliced with footage from his recent performances at The Satellite in Silverlake.
Saturday Night Underwater was written, performed and recorded entirely by Freitas and released in June on Little Record Company. Freitas' fifth full-length, he is also a member of The Mystic Valley Band with Conor Oberst and a touring member of Broken Bells.

A.Dd+, the duo of Paris Pershun and Slim Gravy, may just be leading Dallas towards a rap renaissance. With a recipe that falls somewhere between UGK’s downhome Southern cooking and the abstract vibes of the Native Tongues movement, the group’s first release Power of the Tongue, earned them local acclaim and a “Best Rap Act” nomination from the Dallas Observer. When Pigs Fly, their debut album, produced by Picnic Tyme (of Erykah Badu's Cannabinoids crew) dropped in March 2011. A.Dd+ will also be releasing a slew of new, unreleased music, in addition to videos from When Pigs Fly.
"With the video for 'Under' we wanted to push the envelope of creativity," explain the duo, who enlisted director Israel 'Izzy' Isas to shoot the visual. "We were able to show an inner conflict, a conflict with self, and the cause and effects of what we choose to do in our everyday life." Dustin Cavazos, who opens the song with a poignant verse that speaks to sidetracked aspirations, joins in the video, before Paris and Slim close out the song, each building atop producer Picnic Tyme's melancholy, piano-driven beat, which samples Little Dragon's "Twice."

The song that started it all, "Gucci Gucci," has taken on a life of its own, with dozens of people posting their remixes and "how to do your make-up like Kreayshawn" tutorials on YouTube. Now, hot on the heels of Weezy's and Trey Songz' mixtape versions of the song, "Gucci Gucci" is getting the royal treatment, compliments of South London-based rapper Giggs. Crowned Best UK Hip-Hop Act at the 2009 BET Awards and recently signed to XL Recordings, Giggs jumps on the first verse of the song with his deep, monotone drone, that paired with Kreayshawn's higher register, paints the song a different color. Giggs is hungry and wants that "peanut butter jelly." Ladies, guard your Lunchables.

Call For Submissions - TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary

The Main Gallery Space is programmed through an annual call for submissions as well as by curated exhibitions. TRUCK hosts eight exhibitions each year in this space and accepts applications from professional artists only. TRUCK’s definition of a professional artist is someone who has:
- completed his/her basic training (or the equivalent)
- produced an independent body of work
- presented their work in a professional context
- maintained an independent professional practice for at least one year
Undergraduate students currently enrolled in school, college or university are not eligible to apply, however this restriction only applies to our main space and students are welcome to apply to the +15 and CAMPER spaces. Graduate students are eligible only if they meet TRUCK Gallery’s definition of a professional artist.

Call for Entries for the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival
Art Division / Entertainment Division / Animation Division / Manga Division

The Japan Media Arts Festival is organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, with the aim of promoting the creation and development of media arts (comic, animation, game and media art). The call is for entries in four divisions, Art, Entertainment, Animation and Manga, and is open to entries from anywhere in the world. The Agency will award a Grand Prize and a number of other awards at the festival, and the winning works will also be exhibited.
Last year saw 1951 entries from Japan and 694 from elsewhere (48 countries and regions) and more than 70,000 visitors attended the exhibition of award-winning works. The festival has grown into an event that attracts wide attention both in Japan and around the world.
The application period has now been officially set. Applications for entry will be accepted until Thursday, September 22, 2011. After entries are judged, an exhibition of award-winning works will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo from Wednesday, February 22 through Sunday, March 4 , 2012.

"We have looked at different scenarios when predicting the future, the future of consumer behaviors, fashion and living. Extreme predictions and mind-bending conceptions of how life will be not so long from now leads to theories and off shoots that might seem beyond belief, becoming even more intriguing.
Future inhabitants of the earth controlling their avatars from home in comfortable jumpsuits are reflected upon in the collection through a strong sports attire reference. Why not imagine the earth being covered in garbage, and humans in tracksuits living on a spaceship waiting for the robots to clear it up? A lack of human labour, fully sponsored lives and need for extreme self-exposure manifests trough super-stupid prints for AW2011.
Crinkled and sheer fabrics, net and organza suggests all day nudity when we no longer need to step outside. Cocoon like shapes is our interpretation of future endeavours in spirituality and religion. Exposed seams and anti fit silhouettes gives utterance to our inner spirits.
A darker side of our future visions shows a post apocalyptic earth, full of metal scraps and garbage. By using home made type of dyes, rubberized denim and dirty tints we gave the collection a dark, futuristic look. This image also gave birth to a strict, army inspired look with chimney collars."
