A Step Back into the Future // March 26 - May 1, 2011 // The Proposition // New York, NY

Back when people smoked cigarettes and drank martinis with no awareness of negative consequences, James Mont was designing outrageous living rooms with sofas covered in exquisite densely textured fabrics and furniture with complex surfaces piled with layers of tinted lacquers and gold and silver leaf.

This exhibition will bring you into a living room of the future set in the past and the gallery will be divided into three segments, all containing arrangements of c.1950 vintage furniture designed by James Mont amidst appropriately themed patterned backdrops of custom wallpaper designed by Este Lewis.

video : Dinner At The Thompson's - "Rice N' Beans" feat. Guilty Simpson

The track was "inspired by a desire to bring an afro-beat influence into a rap beat," says Lucille. "The lyrics are a sort of modern tale between a man and a woman, and they speak about what each can expect and give to each other. 'Rice N' Beans' is a metaphor for the essential – the nutrients, the basic needs in a relationship." Trumpet and saxophone players Ernesto Sanchez and Sam McStuff, both jazzmen heavily influenced by afro-beat, are perfect added ingredients to Fablive's low-down, dirty, and funky vibe, while Guilty Simpson's gruff vocals fill out the track, complementing Lucille's sultry sassiness. "I'm giving you all that class, you asking me more for much," she sings. "I'm giving you Rice 'N' Beans/ Your honey, your loving, and all those things."

Dinner At The Thompson's Off The Grid drops May 17th on Earth At Work Recordings.

INTRAWELT, Galerie Lichtpunkt (Munich)

INTRAWELT, Galerie Lichtpunkt (Munich)

Roger Wardin // INTRAWELT // April 8, 2011 until May 20, 2011 // Galerie Lichtpunkt // Munich

In Roger Wardin's art, visions of the present and of the world are created in the form of experimental adaptation, and based on his own unique personal perspectives. However, they do not appear solipsistic. Much more so, they reflect the personal observations of his own contact and ongoing encounter and dialog with aesthetic, psychological, and sociological contemporary phenomena, which are not isolated from one another, but are all interconnected. Special graphic structures are used. Lights "burned into" the canvas, sometimes even appearing as mere balls of light, only allow one to discern light from darkness. Situations appear that seem like a still from a movie, frozen in their form. In his art, Roger Wardin formulates a model of subjective questioning and revelation, as a kind of self-experiment. Concretely, that means that he experiments with pre-existing, found models of observation and expression, which he investigates as an artist, and that he then further develops in his own medium of painting. He is always conscious of the fact that in converting one medium to another, specifically, images from the Internet or film into the reality of the painted picture always represents an adaptation or appropriation of forms, a translation, and an interpretation of contents.

Roger Wardin lives and works in Berlin. Mr. Wardin studied at the Stüdelschule in Frankfurt/Main, Germany under Professor Jörg Immendorf, and also studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Düsseldorf, also under Prof. Immendorf. After completing his Meisterschüler (master craftsman certification) in 2001 at the UDK in Berlin, he received grants from the Kulturfonds Foundation (Cultural Funding Foundation), the Karl-Hofer Gesellschaft (Karl-Hofer Society) in Berlin, the Columbus Art Foundation in Leipzig, Germany, and the Art and Spirit Program in Tessin, Switzerland. Mr. Wardin has participated in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad. His works have also been acquired by numerous public and private collections, among them the Hypo-Kunsthalle in Munich, and the Columbus Art Foundation in Leipzig and Ravensburg, Germany.

mp3 : Moe Green "Masterpiece"

Moe Green : Masterpiece

download : Moe Green - Masterpiece.mp3

Moe Green is up cooking in the kitchen working on his full length LP, To Who It May Concern, which will drop later this year, while continuing to place the finishing touches on his latest, the Lionheart EP, which will drop in May as a free download.

"My heart beats for the mic needs me/ and when I get up in this game I hope she might keep me," raps Moe, even dropping a reference to Levar Burton's character from the 1970's mini-series, Roots. For Moe, the song is a show and prove moment, and a testament to both the strength of his lyrics and his quality of his songwriting abilities. "Every song I make, I'm trying to make is a masterpiece," says Moe matter-of-factly. "I love music, but the game can chew you up and spit you out, so it's important to make timeless music"

SOTIRI 2011 - International competition for young photographers

Intimate Propaganda: Family photographs // Deadline: May 15, 2011

First Prize 1000 Euro

The Albanian heritage in the field of photography is part of the Balkan heritage as well. As an aspiring country to be part of European community, Albania turned its intention over the cultural tradition and heritage, to discover it, to study and promote these values, that are part of European and international cultural heritage. As such they deserve to find a place in the human creativity heritage.

http://www.projekt56.com/web_all/exhibitions.html

Call for Applications

Visual artists under the age of 35 working with lens-based media are invited to apply for Sotiri Prize 2011 until May 15, 2011. The works of shortlisted artist, chosen by the curator of this year’s edition based on their quality and relevance to the topic of the competition, will be shown in the group exhibition at June 10, 2011 in the Gallery of Arts in Korca, Albania. A jury of experts will choose the winner.

1.About Sotiri Prize

‘Sotiri’ is an international competition for young photographers, organized by the Cultural Center Lindart in Tirana. Sotiri Prize is organized in partnership with the Municipality of Korca under the auspice of the Mayor Mr. Niko Peleshi.

The prize is named after the local photographer Kristaq Sotiri (1883-1970) who trained at the studio of the USA photographer Steckel. There he learned not only the basic techniques of photographic portraiture, but was also acquainted with the style of pictorialism, which was quite in fashion at the time. According to Francois Cheval, director of the Museum Nicéphor Niépce in France, Sotiri was a master in capturing the proper instant and in creating intelligent compositions of events and portraits of people of his city... These portraits gave Sotiri the opportunity to apply pictorialism, which makes the collection of his images a rare thing within the Albanian photography tradition.

Since 2008, young artists from all over the world are invited to Korça to show their best works in an exhibition and participate in the panel discussion. The Sotiri Prize aims to support new developments in the field of photography, both in Albania and internationally, as well as to promote the values of the Sotiri collection, as part of the Albanian photography heritage.

Concept : Intimate Propaganda : Family photographs
Curator : Anouck Durand, France

There are millions of family snap shots. Most of them are realized by amateurs and the families themselves. Whereas the families differ, the photographs are very alike. The chosen scenes are dependent on the same codes, representing happiness. To quote Martin Parr « most family photo albums are a form of propaganda, where the family looks perfect and everyone is smiling », How can we use or undo theses codes? By creating new setting with real or fictional families? By exploiting existing photography?
The expecting project may be new photographs, photos from family albums, mixed techniques (collage, paintings, montages are welcome).

Application Material :

In order to participate in the competition please send the following application material :
- Name and surname, address, telephone, email and website (if applicable)
- Project description – up to one A4 page
- CV with education, previous exhibitions, grants, awards etc – up to two A4 pages
- Visual documentation of up to 15 images in digital form (JPG, 72dpi, longer side max. 1200 pixel)
- Image identification list with technical details regarding your work

Deadline for applications : May 15, 2011

Please, send your application material to the following e-mail address: culturalcentrelindart@yahoo.com

Daniel Buren 'Allegro Vivace' at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden

Daniel Buren - Allegro Vivace at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden

Daniel Buren 'Allegro Vivace' // February 12, 2011 – May 22, 2011 // Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden // Tuesday to Sunday 11 h – 18 h / Thursday 11 h – 19 h // Baden-Baden, Germany

In the late 1960s, Daniel Buren (French, born 1938), purposefully renouncing the artist’s studio, began adorning public spaces with his posters, the so-called affichages sauvages. The colourful vertical stripes, precisely 3.4 inches wide, have become Buren’s trademark piece, a visual tool he has used to this day. Their form is deliberately banal, devoid of content or signification. They forcefully contradict the belief in the autonomy of the work of art, instead alerting the beholder first and foremost to the site at which they are affixed. Buren thus conquered a new domain for art, one that is invisible save for these minimalist signs.

Daniel Buren - Allegro Vivace at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden

Daniel Buren develops a sequence of site-specific interventions for the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden that engage with Hermann Billing’s neoclassicist building. The wall-high structures decisively alter our perception of the architecture and, by interacting with light, colour, and reflections, create impressive spatial sensations of the rooms in which they are deployed. The Café Kunsthalle also undergoes a new configuration, which will be preserved for the duration of the exhibition and beyond.

Daniel Buren - Allegro Vivace at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden

Daniel Buren spans the exhibition across the urban landscape of Baden-Baden. With more than 100 flags, designed by the artist, the glamorous spa town is transformed into an extension of the exhibition space, with the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden as its core. We are grateful for the support bestowed by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg, Daimler AG, Brenner’s Parkhotel & Spa, Baden-Baden and the City of Baden-Baden.

Daniel Buren - Allegro Vivace at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden

The comprehensive catalogue, Daniel Buren Allegro Vivace, published by Karola Kraus and Cora von Pape documents approximately 130 works by Buren. It exemplifies systematically the way the artist deals with space, discussed in the texts of Daniel Buren and essays by Karola Kraus, Doris Krystof and Cora von Pape. The Catalogue is published at Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Köln, 216 p., Hardcover, German/French, € 29,90; in bookshop € 32,00; ISBN 978-3-86560-960-1

History is made of different shades of grey

KEVIN VAN BRAAK // History is made of different shades of grey // April 8 – April 30, 2011 // PROMETEOGALLERY DI IDA PISANI //
Milano

Kevin van Braak reconstructed four office desks of controversial former world leaders – Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Nixon – and the world globe that Hitler had in his office in the Reichskanzlei (the Reich Chancellery).

The desks and the globe are detailed, but are not exact copies. They have the original proportions, but are realized in a different material. The desks are coated in polyurea, which gives them a thick, grey rubber-like layer. It creates a unifying effect. Though the desks carry all the original details, these details are pushed into the background because of the uniform colour and coating. In that way, the desks act more as sculptures than as functional objects. Placed together in one room the exhibition has a height of 78 centimetres, which enhances even more a neutralizing effect. Yet, to neutralize what happened at these desks is not Van Braak’s intention. On the contrary, because of their similar outlook the history that was literally written at these desks comes strongly to the fore. Not in a literal sense or in a direct line with history. The new appearance of these historical objects makes that they resist being literally inscribed with decisions of life and death of millions of people, signed on these desks by their owners. Still, you cannot get rid of associating the thing with the harsh reality its original supported and the bitter imprint it leaves behind. For sure, the lumpy coating layer does not cover up the gruesome effects of some of the decisions made on these desks. It makes the lead globe on his steel support in the other room even heavier. Van Braak made this Columbus Grossglobus für Staats- und Wirtschaftsführer (Columbus’ Big Globe for World- and Economic Leaders) out of lead. Although it is immediately recognized as a globe, there are no countries visible on it. It evokes a story about Hitler having a small globe on his desk on which all the countries in the world were shown in one grey shade and over them was written ‘Deutschland’ (Germany).
