Carmichael Gallery: "A Mirror Distorted" Andrea Michaelsson, Candice Tripp, Cherri Wood, Pam Glew
August 6, 2009 until August 27, 2009 // Carmichael Gallery // West Hollywood, CA // opening reception Thursday August 6, 2009 // 19h – 22h
Carmichael Gallery presents "A Mirror Distorted"
The show features four talented female artists from Spain, South Africa, The USA and the UK. Andrea Michaelsson, Candice Tripp, Cherri Wood and Pam Glew have each created beautiful bodies of work that explore beauty, pain, vulnerability and strength.
English artist Pam Glew creates striking portraits of women on a variety of vintage media, including fabrics, metal, antique book paper and other aged materials. Her distinctive aesthetic is achieved through a unique creative process involving ink, ammonia, bleach, and spray paint. Pam has been particularly lauded in recent years for her series of hand-worked and sewn flags, which she has exhibited in galleries across the UK and USA. One of a select group of strong female urban artists working today, Pam’s pieces hang in collections throughout North America and Europe. She lives and works in Brighton, England.
Cherri Wood is a young illustrator based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Describing her pieces as “a cluster of ink explosions,” she frequently splashes the paper and canvas with liquid ranging from diet coke to tea and smudges it with willow charcoal and graphite. Cherri has exhibited her work in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver and London.Candice Tripp was born in 1985 in Cape Town, South Africa. The self-taught artist relocated to the UK upon completion of her high school education in 2004 to pursue fashion design at Central Saint Martins. She discontinued her plans for university in 2007 with the booking of her first solo show in Newcastle. Now twenty-three, she has exhibited her work in Los Angeles, London, Newcastle, Vienna and Berlin. Candice most recently enjoyed a successful solo exhibition at Lazarides Gallery, Newcastle. She currently lives and works in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Dana Popa: not Natasha @ Photofusion Photography Centre, London

July 23, 2009 until September 18, 2009 // Photofusion Photography Centre // London, UK
Autograph ABP in partnership with Photofusion presents not Natasha by award-winning photographer Dana Popa. This major project began in 2006 when Popa first traveled to the Republic of Moldova to document, through photography and collected stories, the experiences of sex-trafficked women and their families. 'Natasha' is the nickname given to prostitutes with Eastern European looks. Sex trafficked girls hate it.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moldova is one of the main trafficking source countries for women and children. It is estimated that between 200,000 and 400,000 women have been sold into prostitution abroad – up to 10% of the female population. In Moldova, Popa worked with the International Organization for Migration Shelters and Winlock International where she was given access to photograph and document the experiences of 17 women who had been trafficked.
In 2007 Autograph ABP commissioned Popa to return to Moldova where she began to collect the stories of the disappeared and photograph the families, the homes and in some cases the children who have been left behind. Finally, Popa returned to the UK where she documented the spaces where trafficked women are forced into prostitution in the brothels of Soho, London.
'Behind the fancy facades of the cosmopolitan capitals of Europe, hundreds of rooms become exile spaces for myriads of bodies objectified for male fantasy. While most of them are squalid and cold, many others appear familiar and warm. Mirrors, red lights, posters, the list of services on the bedside – all these little attempts at humanising these rooms, at imbuing them with a kind of homeliness, speak for the girls' need to survive.' Natasha Christia, photography writer and curator
Human trafficking is currently estimated to have a market value of over 32 billion US dollars. Forced prostitution of women and children is the most widespread form of human trafficking today. Kevin Bales, the world's leading expert on contemporary global slavery, recognizes that poverty, deprivation, the desire for a better life and the need to escape conflict and oppression are the vital elements that bring people into contact with traffickers. Deception and false promises are important strategies employed by traffickers. Gaining the confidence of the targeted individuals and their families is an essential part of the trafficking process.
Dana Popa is a photo-artist based in London who graduated from the London College of Communication. Popa specializes in contemporary social issues, with a particular emphasis on human rights. In 2007, not Natasha received the Jury Prize in the Days Japan International Photojournalism Awards and the Jerwood Photography Award. Her work has been exhibited widely and includes the Noorderlicht Photofestival in Leeuwarden, at the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Tokyo and in the exhibition Moving Walls 14 at the Open Society Institute in New York.

Emerald Tablet : Chen Xiaoyun @ ShanghART Gallery, China

July 19, 2009 until August 18, 2009 // ShanghArt, H-Space // Shanghai, China
The exhibition @ ShanghArt from July 19, 2009 through August 18, 2009, speaks the rule behind desire and fantasies, and the title, Emerald Tablet, relates to a text with 13 proverbs in 1900 BC which purporting to reveal the secret of the primordial substance and its transmutations. It claims to be the work of Hermes Trismegistus ("Hermes the Thrice-Great"), a legendary Egyptian sage or god, variously identified with the Egyptian god Thoth and/or the Greek god Hermes, and the proverbs was worshiped by ancient alchemists.
Three parts separately represents "material", "soul" and "outer images" with photographs, videos and installations, and the discussion suggests the inner world of beings. Having touched the balance around all mortals and immortals, now, Chen Xiaoyun practices to unfold his attention involved with experimental irony. The artist thinks the rules from the Emerald Tablet work on him too as they guided the ancient alchemists to explore the physical world with strong essence. Moreover, the precious factors in alchemy like "uncertainty" and "frustration" were inherited by art. Chen Xiaoyun speaks his mind carefully with metaphors and scenarios. Like the image of "octopus", which was given multiple implications like "king" "sun" or "comet", a power in chaos. Nevertheless, the rigorous order and basis appears whenever the surface was broken through, and the reason of everything runs on the same track.

Carmichael Gallery presents Celebrity Will Eat Itself, a new series of works on canvas by English painter Guy Denning. This is the artist’s debut US solo exhibition.
Guy Denning has long entranced fans with the striking style and ethereal beauty of his androgynous portraiture. The Bristol-born artist’s newest body of work explores the notion of the eternally solipsistic uber-celebrity in all its splendor, hedonism, and pain.

Pool Gallery presents Andy Gilmore "Black Math"
July 11, 2009 until August 22, 2009 // Pool Gallery // Berlin, Germany // opening reception: Friday July 10, 2009 @ 19:00 h - 23:00 h
Bright swirling colors, intricately interwoven lines morphing into sleek harmonius forms - the mesmerizing kaleidescopic images of Rochester, New York-based multi-talent Andy Gilmore have a futuristic, almost alien feel to them. His designs transcend straight-forward aesthetic beauty, their forms inhabiting a realm of mathematical complexity, containing a certain geometric musicality.
Andy Gilmore is also a musician. Deeply interested in the physics of sound and acoustics, his work reflects just that. In these pieces, Gilmore explores the physical properties of tone - the resonance of a single string creating a range of vibrations and sound waves, both audible and inaudible - and mirrors that relationship visually, producing complex images with overtones swimming through undertones, melodies dancing with accompaniment.
Composed primarily of bold and bright colors on black backgrounds, Gilmore's hypnotic forms seem to hover like spacecrafts - out-of-this-world figures of elaborate and sophisticated design. More than a participant in the rising trend of digital art, Andy Gilmore is an innovator, dreaming up works that, without computers, could not exist.
Andy Gilmore currently lives and works in Rochester, New York. His graphic design clients include: The New York Times, Dazed & Confused Magazine, Wire Magazine, and many more.

B96 present celebrated hip hop emcee K’NAAN on Wednesday July 8, 2009. K’NAAN successfully blends samples and live instrumentation for a sound that’s both rooted in traditional African melodies and the classic hip-hop tradition. Growing up in war-torn Somalia, K'NAAN has seen more gun violence and tougher streets than your average gangster rapper could ever imagine, yet he chooses to use his experience to spread peace with his eloquent and thought-provoking lyrics.
K’NAAN’s newest album, Troubadour, represents the sum of these experiences and more. Having spent the better part of the last two years traveling the world, taking his message directly to the people , soaking in everything from Bob Dylan to Fela Kuti to and Mos Def , Troubadour is the sonic document of an artist who has a lot to share, but clearly has a lot more in the coming years. For anyone who’s said that hip-hop has nothing left to say, Troubadour proves that it all depends on where you look.Wednesday July 8, 2009 // The Fineline 318 First Ave N Minneapolis, MN // doors @ 20:00 h // info@B96.com // 9528427200 // Special Performance by: MUJA MESSIAH // M.ANIFEST // KAY

Linda Warren Gallery (Chicago): Alex O'Neal
June 26, 2009 until August 17, 2009 // Linda Warren Gallery // Chicago, IL
The gallery is excited to kick off summer with an exhibition of recent work by Alex O’Neal - his second solo show at Linda Warren Gallery. The exhibition runs from June 26 through August 17, 2009. The artist’s continuing life experiences and fascinations continue to inform paintings and elaborate oil pastel drawings in which a world full of eccentric, dynamic characters compete, even scream, for attention. Though their origins emanate from prior work – and the artist’s upbringing in the Mississippi Delta - they have developed a definitive, unabashed dress code of glam rock/punk rock/drag - accompanied by all the paraphernalia needed to make such a loud and dramatic fashion statement.
Working in the vein of Southern Gothic, O’Neal puts ostracized individuals, superstars, and superheroes center stage in his narratives to address a cacophony of ideas surrounding disguise, dysfunction, secrecy, anarchy, community, religious fervor, power, struggle, nature, “homegrown terrorism”, hope, passion and inspiration. O’Neal believes that the newest work “speaks more personally and specifically, referring more to the dysfunctional family unit” saying he, “in a way, is Pop-Artizing a small dysfunctional community, that…has its resident anarchists and terrorists, veiled in disguises…ready to drop their trademark bombs at family gatherings”.
Alex O’Neal received his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1979 and his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985. He has been the recipient of many fellowships and awards, including from the Guggenheim Foundation in 1999, New York Foundation for the Arts in 2001, and National Endowment for the Arts 1987-1988. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries both here and abroad, and can be found in many prestigious private collections around the globe. Although he currently lives and works in Brooklyn, Artist Residency programs continue to play a big part in the development of O’Neal’s visual language, as he has enjoyed over a dozen of such experiences throughout the United States and Europe in the past 15 years.
