Opening Reception: Thursday July 9, 2009 // 7 pm – 10 pm // July 9, 2009 until July 30, 2009 // Carmichael Gallery 1257 N. La Brea Ave West Hollywood CA 90038
The A – Z of Change, the debut LA solo exhibition of Eine. Internationally recognized for his super-sized lettering in urban areas, Eine will unveil a new body of works on canvas that combine his trademark typeface, vivid color palette and provocative imagery to powerful effect.
An opening reception for The A – Z of Change will be held on Thursday July 9 2009 from 7 pm – 10 pm with Eine in attendance. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Thursday, July 30 2009 from 1 pm – 7 pm.
Vandal, graffiti writer, street artist, fine artist, Eine has over twenty years experience of drawing a crowd. The former master printer at UK publishing house Pictures On Walls takes deceptively simple typography to a new level with iconic lettering which graces storefront shutters and city walls throughout the world.
Eine has enjoyed successful group and solo shows at galleries throughout London, Scandinavia and the US and has participated in numerous art events and festivals, including Santa’s Ghetto (2004-2007) and Nuart (2007). His work has been featured in numerous books, magazines and other publications. Eine most recently entered the Guinness Book of World Records for hand-pulling the most colors (78) in a silk-screen print.
Upcoming Shows
Thursday August 6, 2009 - In the front gallery "Celebrity Will Eat Itself", a solo exhibition of new work by Guy Denning. In the rear gallery "A Mirror Distorted" a group show featuring Andrea from Btoy, Candice Tripp, Cherri Wood, and Pam Glew.

FABRIC OF SURVIVAL: The Art of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz
June 14, 2009 until October 25, 2009 // Oceanside Museum of Art // Oceanside, CA
Oceanside Museum of Art is embarking on a series of special programs inspired by the art in the coming exhibition, FABRIC OF SURVIVAL: The Art of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz, that opened on June 14, 2009 and runs through October 25, 2009. Esther Nisenthal Krinitz was a teenager in rural Poland when the Nazis invaded her quiet village changing her life forever. Separated from their family, young Esther and her sister survived the Holocaust pretending to be Polish Catholics, eventually coming to America after the war. Several programs are planned throughout the exhibition that celebrate Jewish culture and honor Holocaust memories.
In New York, Esther began her life as Mrs. Max Krinitz, and continued the sewing and embroidery she learned as a child. She was an avid storyteller and throughout their lives, shared with her daughters the story of her harrowing days as a youth in Nazi occupied Poland. A gifted seamstress, Esther decided, at age 50, to tell her story in cloth, stitching thirty-six beautiful and poignant appliqué and embroidered panels which comprise the exhibition, FABRIC OF SURVIVAL: The Art of Esther Nisenthal Krinitz.
On June 28, 2009 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Mrs. Krinitz’ daughters, Bernice Steinhardt and Helene McQuade will present a slide lecture at the museum as co-founders of the nonprofit organization Art and Remembrance. The purpose of Art and Remembrance is to use the power of storytelling and art to illuminate the effects of war, intolerance, and social injustice. The exhibition also features a 13-minute video with Mrs. Krinitz by award-winning director, Lawrence Kasdan.

Knight and Hunters : Ken Garduno, Jason Hernandez, Michael C. Hsiung, Sam Saghatelian
now until July 11, 2009 // Black Maria // Los Angeles, CA
Black Maria Gallery announces "Knights and Hunters," a new group exhibition that opened on Saturday, June 13. The show features new drawings and paintings by Los Angeles artists Ken Garduno, Jason Hernandez, Michael C. Hsiung and Sam Saghatelian. The exhibited works share a common theme in that they explore the complex interconnectedness of chivalry and machismo, according to Zara Zeitountsian, the director of Black Maria Gallery.
"Against the backdrop of gender politics, the ever-evolving roles of men and women, and particularly the cultural underpinnings that inform tradition and change, the 'Knights and Hunters' exhibition examines our understanding of what could be described as the gentleman's ethos on the one hand, and the Don Juan complex on the other," Zeitountsian explained."As the works included in the exhibition shed light on the many ironies of what it might mean to be a man in the contemporary world, they reveal the comical, the shocking and not-so-shocking, and sometimes the downright grotesque," Saghatelian continued. "So it is that many of the works are tongue-in-cheek and unabashedly over the top. But perhaps the most important thread running through these works is that of a certain loving curiosity, and ultimately an insistence on pointing at a common humanity beyond the politics and stereotypes."

Douglas Hannant
Photos: Gerard Gentil
Judging by the look of many of Douglas Hannant’s current Resort pieces, it appears to this editor that perhaps the designer might have gone straight to inspirations such as the current Broadway revival of that old fave, “Hair”, along with some cool vintage and retro boutiques, vintage and retro books, magazines, photography and the like.
Seeing the collection, though, really brings to mind, clear images of more than just a few of those beautiful, fabulously dressed hippie chicks of the l960’s; the girls who shopped hard, played hard, partied hard, and always wore flowers in their hair, no matter if they were in San Francisco, New York, Woodstock, London, Paris, Cannes or Milan.
Generally, there is much to love in the 22-piece grouping. While the sexy “Gypsy Style” and opulent “Rich Bohemian” themes win for coming across as highly covetable and best-looking, the more toned-down and somewhat staid“Traveler” pieces do seem to take somewhat of a bit of a back seat to everything else across the line.

(Berlin) Pool Gallery presents: Ismaël Bennani: "Trop Mignon"
Pool Gallery presents: Ismaël Bennani: "Trop Mignon" // June 25, 2009 until June 28, 2009 // Opening reception: Thursday, June 25, 2009 // 7 pm - 11 pm // Pool Gallery Tucholskystr 38
10117 Berlin, Germany // fon: 49.30.24342462
Ismaël Bennani is not a hamster; but for a special four-day performance at Pool Gallery, he will become one, in an exploration of voyeurism in today's society.
In Trop Mignon ('Too Cute'), Bennani focuses specifically on the voyeuristic fascination we all seem to have with the mundane, the ordinary - the guy across the courtyard, the lady next door. What is it that is so interesting about someone doing the same things that we all do? Is it merely the fact that they don't know you're watching?
The hamster you might keep as a pet, living next to you in your home yet with which you do not really interact; the hamster, there to watch as it sits in its cage, digging in the seeds and woodchips, maybe cleaning itself, running in its wheel; the hamster as the bored neighbor that you watch through the window as they cook themselves dinner, read a book, hang their laundry to dry.
Ismaël Bennani, born in L'Ariana, Tunis, currently lives and works in Berlin.

A New Norm: Michele Liebler
now until June 20, 2009 // First Street Gallery // New York, NY
Liebler's new series of portraits has led to a social commentary on our sorry state of existence. They take form in expressionistic and sometimes even cartoonish works. Her paintings, monotypes, and works on paper all share a common thread. Our threaten existence. They range from environmental victims, to political puppet heads, and Barbie Doll looking women. Liebler remarks that, "This is the world, this is what's going on around me and I can't change that." In Losing Face she propels her victims in a hybrid world of masked faces, each with their own personalized face mask. Each portrait is different from the other and each one in there own separate panel, arranged and stacked on top of each other to form an impressive 9 panel installation.
Installed in Subculture the portraits collectively communicate an ingrained social narrative. Whether she is working from her figures or from an image bank, the colored pencils, graphite, and charcoal give the pieces slightly eerie presences. The portraits have been set down in a direct and apt manner, while the monotypes become more lyrical in nature present us with the hybrid quality of the medium.
Michele Liebler received her BFA from Purchase College. She works and lives in New York City. She has exhibited extensively on the East Coast in such venues as the Parrish Art Museum, Southhampton, NY; Arnot Art Museum, Elmira NY; College of Notre Dame, Baltimore, MD; University of Pittsburgh, PA; National Academy of Design, NYC; the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH.
Artistas de Vangardia and Bik Van der Pol
now until July 19, 2009 // Pump House Gallery // London, UK
This is the first major UK presentation of the works of Grupo de Artistas de Vangardia (Argentina) and Loompanics Unlimited by Bik Van der Pol (Netherlands). Although visually very different, the ideas, approach and debates explored through their works are remarkably similar, encouraging the viewer to consider such ideas as power, economic disparity, the State and the social role of art.
Grupo de Artistas de Vangardia, formed in the 1960s, created some of the most important examples of political and investigative art in Latin America. This exhibition, co-produced with Graciela Carnevale, a member and participant in the group's projects, brings together an archive of photographs, manifestos, reports and documentation of their activities.
Bik Van der Pol (Liesbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol) have been working together since 1995. They explore the potential of art to produce and transmit knowledge, and often reuse and reactivate the work of others to find new connections and points of interaction. A publishing and book selling company, Loompanics Unlimited (1975-2006) specialized in unusual and controversial books, manuals that 'your mother and the state would rather you didn't read'
