Asbestos (Dublin, Ireland), Bumblebee (Downey, USA), Cena7 (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Fefe Talavera (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Imminent Disaster (New York City, USA), Labrona (Montreal, Canada), and Oddzoo (Los Angeles, USA). Seven very different voices scream the language of city streets near and far with a range of artwork as varied as the emotions behind them.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 7pm – 10pm with Bumblebee and Oddzoo in attendance.

"Mood Swings" is the tenth in a series of shows produced in collaboration with other member galleries in the ROJO artspace global network for a project entitled OCHO, a celebration of ROJO’s eighth anniversary and the first global group art show ever.

Asbestos

Dublin-based artist Asbestos finds the dark, dank, and forgotten objects of the street and transforms them into vibrant pieces that share the history and present-day life of the city and its inhabitants. His flair for mixed media combines photography, collage, gold leaf, spray paint and acrylics to create unforgettable imagery bursting with intensity. Highly skilled in portraiture, Asbestos applies his focus both to his subjects' faces and their hands, broadening the viewer's perspective to encapsulate the part of the human body he believes conveys the essence of the individual.

Bumblebee

Bumblebee’s work often comes to life in the streets of Downey, California (just outside Los Angeles), where he was born and raised. Growing up in a community where art was difficult to come by, Bumblebee felt driven to make his work public, painting on abandoned buildings and unloved parts of the city. His name is partly derived from the black and yellow stripes on his stencil and sculpture work and his playful yet haunting imagery of children and bees. Bumblebee’s newest campaign involves the remodeling of urban furniture, including abandoned phone kiosks and newsstands with paper maché and modeling clay.

Cena7

Out painting on the streets from the age of fourteen, Cena7 quickly developed a unique visual language that reflects the natural and urban environment of his country. Describing his inspiration as “all that makes me tremble,” he weaves rich primary tones amidst warm earthy hues to create the meditative landscape of anthropomorphic figures amid swooning plants and insects for which he is known. In the past year, he has exhibited in Melbourne, Miami, and Sao Paulo.

Fefe Talavera

‘Lil Monsta’ is a fitting nickname for Fefe Talavera, whose formidable, multi-layered monster paintings and collages render traditional animals slightly bland as they transport viewers to a subliminal world of rage, terror, and desire. The heightened quality of Fefe’s work, which exudes a raw stylistic freedom reminiscent of Basquiat, is fed by her strong social and political conscience and bold reinterpretation of Mayan and Aztec mythology. Fefe has exhibited in galleries throughout the world.

Imminent Disaster

Imminent Disaster is an emerging Brooklyn-based artist who wheatpastes wood, linoleum and silkscreened prints. Disaster is inspired by the street as an environment: a place with people, structures and history that are constantly being destroyed and rebuilt. Combining carefully researched fact and legend, she creates figurative images and historically inspired broadsides that are glimpses of a world that has fallen through the cracks of time. Disaster has participated in the Miss Rockaway Armada and Wooster on Spring, amongst other group and featured exhibitions. She is currently at sea on the Swimming Cities of Serenissima.

Labrona

Drawing inspiration from 80s skate culture, rundown industrial areas, and German Expressionism, Labrona’s enthralling visual narratives stem from his fascination with and desire to convey raw human feeling. He has participated in group and solo exhibitions across the US, Canada, and Europe.

Oddzoo

Born in Waimanalo, Hawaii, Jay “Oddzoo” Doronio has drawn and painted almost his entire life. Upon moving to California, he was introduced to the sights and sounds of graffiti and hip hop. The vibrant power of these mediums has assisted in laying the foundations of his artwork today.

30,000 paper raindrops. 40,000 feet of fishing twine. 2,500 fishing weights. Hundreds of sheets of cardboard fashioned into miniature works of art and life-size cut-out characters (only expect 5 – 10). Incorporating all of the above ingredients and more for his debut Los Angeles solo show at Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art on May 7th, 2009, Israeli artist Know Hope invites you to literally step inside one of his artworks for a visual experience unlike any you have ever encountered and one you will never forget.

“This exhibition holds nothing but a reflection of where we are now, and offers us nothing but the suggestion of adaptation and (re)adjustment to the current tides. This is a binding burden, and we're all in this together.” – Know Hope

Know Hope was born in California and currently resides in Tel Aviv, Israel. He has worked in the streets for several years and participated in exhibitions in Israel, UK, Norway, Italy, Canada, and the US. “I hope to move heavy hearts at least one inch to the side by confessing that I'm petrified and secretly in love with the world.”

Sabah Naim: Solo Exhibition at Townhouse Gallery in Cairo, Egypt

Sabah Naim : Solo Exhibition

now until May 20, 2009 // Townhouse Gallery / Factory Space // Cairo, Egypt

This is Sabah Naim’s third solo exhibition at Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art which will be her largest show in Egypt in several years. Her artwork is currently on displayed in both the first-floor gallery and the factory space now through May 20, 2009. The artist will present recent work produced in London and Cairo, including a short video. Naim photographs people as they move through public space: walking down the street, relaxing in the park, sitting on the metro.

Visitors at a museum are captured as they take break on benches—paused spectators turned spectacle. As in her earlier work, Naim enlarges her snapshots, xeroxing or printing them on canvas, and then paints and draws over the black-and-white images. Playing with figure and ground, she alternately highlights or obscures the protagonists in her portraits. The intervention of her hand does not individuate but instead adds another layer of noise in the city, another mask for these faces in the crowd.

In this particular exhibition, Naim introduces embroidery to her work, pushing her images into three dimensions. She combines photography with handpainted motifs, covering young men in sloganed t-shirts with stitched appliqués, Naim questions binaries such as contemporary and traditional, the masculine and the feminine, fine art and craft.

Sabah Naim lives and works in Cairo, where she is a professor at the College of Art Education. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at B21 Gallery in Dubai and Galleria Lia Rumma in Naples as well as the traveling group shows “Africa Remix” and “Word into Art.”

Del the Funky Homosapien Releases Free Album: Funk Man: The Stimulus Package

Del

"Del hits you again with another dope session!" - mondomedeusah creative

"...Del's reputation has remained strong in both fan and critic circles." - Thrasher Magazine

"The Homosapien is one hell of an entertaining MC" - YRB

Less than a year after the release of his last album, Hieroglyphics member and co-founder Del the Funky Homosapien joins the ranks of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails with the free release of his new album, Funk Man: The Stimulus Package via Funnyman Entertainment. Del is currently on a nationwide promotional tour for the album and will be playing in over 30 cities.

As an early adapter of technology and having the status and perspective only a veteran can possess, Del takes advantage of his unique position to adopt a still experimental distribution strategy with Funk Man's release. Even with longevity, very few artists can hope to successfully launch a free full-length album. However with Del the Funky Homosapien's solid fan base and sponsorship deals with Arnette, Skull Candy, Osiris Shoes, and Bandcamp.com, Funk Man's release not only ensures support for the creative process, but also gives fans easy access to music they crave.
