Andy Warhol: Pop Politics
2008-09-27 until 2009-01-04
Currier Museum of Art
Manchester, NH
Andy Warhol - one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century - captured the likeness of some of the most visionary and powerful political leaders of the 20th century. Images of John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Queen Elizabeth II, and Mao Zedong, among others will hang side-by-side when the Currier Museum of Art presents Andy Warhol: Pop Politics from September 27, 2008 through January 4, 2009. Pop Politics displays together for the first time more than sixty of Warhol's paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs of political figures. His portraits of American presidents and presidential candidates, queens, Communist dictators, and other political figures reveal intriguing, yet until now unexplored insights into Warhol's own celebrity status and political leanings. Warhol's images of these powerful personalities comment on the interrelationships between politics and celebrity culture in the late twentieth century - connections that remain ever present today. Timed to coincide with the 2008 presidential election, this exhibition offers a probing and entertaining look through the eyes of America's most famous Pop artist at the leaders who shaped the twentieth century.
Warhol (1928-1987) rose to fame in the 1960s and became synonymous with Pop art and American culture of the period. He played upon the increased bombardment of advertising and media images to develop a signature style that employed commercial subjects rendered in bold, graphic designs and colors using mass production processes. In capturing the rebellious spirit of the time through his work and personality, Warhol created a body of work that transformed our understanding of art by blurring the boundaries between art and popular culture and shaped a new aesthetic that came to symbolize the counterculture. His now iconic work has influenced subsequent generations of artists and continues to resonate with audiences today, both young and old.
Building upon a long history of political portraiture dating back to Egyptian pharaohs, Roman emperors, and European monarchs, Warhol pictured twentieth-century politicians in his graphic style which likened them to commercial products like Campbell's soup and Coca-Cola. In so doing, Warhol connected his images of these leaders to America's fascination and consumption of all aspects of contemporary culture. His portraits are not just records of the individuals; they also position the leaders within the context of cultural taste and political values.
A dedicated portraitist, Warhol captured the likeness of an astonishing number of individuals including those of friends, artists, actors, athletes, and world leaders. His depictions of John F. Kennedy, Mao Zedong, Queen Elizabeth II, and others were derived from widely circulated official or media photographs. Warhol's appropriation of these stock images signaled his interest in how political leaders ascended to celebrity status as a result of their constant representation in the media.
The exhibition highlights Warhol's fascination with America's "royal family" - the Kennedys - through his images of President John F. and Jackie Kennedy and Senators Robert and Edward Kennedy. Struck by the media coverage of President Kennedy's assassination, Warhol created a series of works based on news images of Jackie, both as glamorous First Lady and as grieving wife. Seven of these paintings will be shown alongside rare preparatory studies. The exhibition features a recent Currier acquisition: Flash ˆ November 22, 1963 Produced five years after the assassination and exhibited now at the forty-fifth anniversary of the tragic event, this print portfolio includes eleven screenprints based on related news images including the book depository, Lee Harvey Oswald, and President Kennedy's campaign poster˜making it the only work by Warhol to depict the President. It also reproduces the teletype text from the four days between the President's assassination and funeral, with the sheets bound like a book. Accompanied by archival materials and unique trial proofs related to this project, another major highlight is a one-of-a-kind, never-before exhibited screenprint of Senator Robert Kennedy that Warhol did not include in the final edition of the Flash portfolio. Also featured are excerpts from a 1965 reenactment of the assassination filmed in Warhol's New York City loft known as The Factory. These works are shown for the first time alongside Warhol's 1980 portraits of Senator Edward Kennedy.
In addition to selecting certain leaders as his subjects, Warhol was also commissioned by political hopefuls such as Edward Kennedy and Jimmy Carter. Their patronage of Warhol was intended to help position them as contemporary and progressive. That these projects - like his print "Vote McGovern" featuring a green-faced Richard Nixon created to support George McGovern's presidential campaign against the incumbent - were produced to raise funds for candidates' presidential campaigns, illuminates an active, even if veiled, political agenda by Warhol, who claimed he only voted once. Warhol's elevated status in American society also gave him entrée into the world of politics including invitations to governors' mansions and state dinners at the White House. The exhibition highlights these portrait commissions through photographs, drawings, prints, and paintings of each subject.
Central to the exhibition's focus is Warhol's process for creating his portraits. The artist was more directly involved with his portrait commissions than with any other works. Rather than manipulating images he found in mass media outlets, Warhol began his commissions by taking dozens of Polaroid images of his subject. After selecting one or more of these photographs, Warhol transformed the sitter's likeness into his signature style, often first producing drawings and then prints and paintings. This exhibition presents these Polaroids alongside related works of a single subject, capturing Warhol's process as well as the repetition of images that became a hallmark of his work This repeated image is further underscored with the inclusion of a large section of Mao wallpaper that the artist created for a gallery presentation of his work in 1974.
Ever the multimedia artist, Warhol also produced and directed films and created his own television shows. These projects helped shape his presence in American culture. The exhibition also includes excerpts from several of Warhol's film and television programs that include political content: Since (1965), The Life of Juanita Castro (1965), Afternoon (1965), and an episode of Andy Warhol's TV featuring an interview with New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1983).
Throughout the exhibition, works are accompanied by rarely seen archival materials from Warhol's "time capsules." Beginning in 1974, Warhol collected papers, photographs, correspondence, business records, and other objects in cardboard boxes, amassing over six hundred boxes by his death. Highlights relating to the exhibition include a solicitation from President-Elect Nixon for recommendations for his administration, an invitation to Nixon's inauguration, a signed letter from Senator Robert Kennedy expressing his thanks for Warhol's support, and a handwritten note from First Lady Nancy Reagan. These materials yield new insights into Warhol's connection to the political celebrities he portrayed and how those relationships extended beyond his portraits of them.
Andy Warhol: Pop Politics will be accompanied by a full schedule of educational programming. The museum shop will feature Warhol-related merchandise and the Winter Garden Café will have new, themed items on the menu. Visit wwwcurrier.org for more details as they become available.
Andy Warhol: Pop Politics is organized by the Currier Museum of Art, Manchester, NH. The exhibition is sponsored in part by Public Service Company of New Hampshire with additional support from the NBT Charitable Trust and the Badger Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. Media sponsor is WZID, 95.7FM.
Call for Artists: Artist In Residence Program (AIR)
2008-09-29 until 2008-10-31
Raid Projects
Los Angeles, CA
Raid Projects Los Angeles is offering one of two bedrooms and a studio for artists to come to Los Angeles, make new work, network with commercial galleries and curators, and explore Los Angeles at a rate of $1000 US per month (The AIR program will rise in cost for 2009 to $1200 US). The following dates are still available for the 2008 and 2009 Program: December 2008 - January 2009- February 2009, January 2009 - February 2009 - March 2009, March 2009 - April 2009 - May 2009.
to apply: raidprojects@yahoo.com
Overview
The Artist In Residence Program (AIR)
For periods of 3 or 6 months residents are provided with living accommodation and a studio. During the residency Raid encourages the artist to bring curators, critics and collectors to visit the studio and see the produced work privately.
AIR resident artists are predominantly international, but we also host US artists whose projects are suitable to a LA residency. The residency fee from April 2008 is $1000 US per month. This will NOT culminate with an exhibition after this date. The residency will entirely concentrate on the artists experimentation and experience of Los Angeles without the pressure of a final outcome. This residency will be for the artist to choose to spend their time wherever they feel it will do them the most good. There is a space dedicated to displaying work for any visits by curators, critics, etc but will not act as a show or host an opening. Please note, upon acceptance into the program, it is up to the artist to secure their space by providing a non-refundable deposit of the first months rent ($1000US). This is the only way to cement the dates you wish to have. The AIR program will rise in cost for 2009 to $1200 US to reflect increases in rent as well as the decline in value of the US dollar.
1. Gallery Hopping: Shortly after their arrival the artist will be encouraged to visit the many galleries, opening receptions and arts events happening every week. This is a great way to meet people in the LA art scene.
2. Getting Started: Raid does not provide artists with materials for their projects. However, there are tools at Raid and the artist is more than welcome to use them, but types and availabilities will vary from time to time. And on the subject of tools, Home Depot is just down the street.
3. Analysis: Upon the artist's request, to engage in a comprehensive critique with the gallery director before the artist completes their residency.
How to Apply
To apply for Raid Artist In Residence program: AIR has no application form or deadline. Mail a proposal, resume, images of your work (slide or CD), CV, artist statement, press reviews and any other relevant materials that provides us with an idea of the breadth of your work to:

Gallery Vertigo
Vernon, British Columbia, Canada
The North Okanagan Artists Alternative is calling for environmentally-minded artists, writers and performers to take part in an exhibition to be held at Gallery Vertigo from October 7th to November 1st, 2008. "This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper."(Eliot) How will the world end? According to T.S. Eliot, it will end with a whimper, and not a cataclysmic event. This NOAA Annual Members themed exhibition invites members think about this idea and to create works that address such environmental "issues" as air pollution, water and soil degradation, pesticide use, rampant urban sprawl, public transportation, abuse of fossil fuels, food hybridization, loss of wildlife habitat, animal extinction, etc. This is a chance for "visual artists, musicians, actors, writers and caring citizens" to express their concerns and raise awareness in creative fashion.
TRS: Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Spore, Burn After Reading, Fringe, True Blood
Alex, Dan, and Jeff named last year's Cohen Bros masterpiece, No Country for Old Men, the TRS movie of the year. The newest offering from Joel and Ethan is quite different. Are the guys as ebullient about Burn After Reading?
There are pictures of California's Governor on the set of the new Terminator film. The guys speculate on the merits of putting Arnold's head on another actor's body.
Video Games:
Lucasarts has pulled out all the stops in making the newest Star Wars game, integrating the story into official Star Wars canon, and taking the usual limits off when it comes to using the force. As huge Star Wars fans, Alex, Dan, and Jeff decide if The Force Unleashed really is the video game experience they've always dreamed of.
No video game has generated more hype and greater anticipation than Will Wright's Spore. Now that the game is finally out, have the guys' opinions evolved?
TV:
Is JJ Abrams newest series, Fringe a throwback to the must-see goodness of X-Files, or have Alex, Dan, and Jeff been there and done that?
After last week's review of Towelhead, and the guys' love of Six Feet Under, expectations are high for Alan Ball's latest offering, the HBO series, True Blood. How did the first episode stack up?

Jonas Liverod: Aah, The Smell of Blood and Snow! :: Permanent Daylight pt.1
2008-09-19 until 2008-10-18 // Pool Gallery // Berlin, Germany
Pool Gallery is pleased to present the Swedish artist Jonas Liverod's first Berlin exhibition. This event will mark the first installation in the ongoing series called Permanent Daylight. Throughout 2008 and 2009 the series will travel through a number of galleries and museums (among others: Ystad Museum of Art, Kristinehamn Museum of Art, and Nordin Gallery in Sweden). The exhibition will also function as the world premiere for Liverod's new book "The Violence" released by the Norwegian publisher noCUBE in collaboration with Re-public. The title of the show at Pool Gallery sets the tone: dark humour and twisted Scandinavian psychedelia gone bad. Through his manic large scale drawings, uncanny objects and site-specific constructions, the artist builds an atmosphere of violent but seductive tension, punk ritual and unfocused energy.
Jonas Liverod was born in 1974. He lives and works in Sweden and has had exhibitions and projects at galleries and museums in Spain, Germany, the United States, France and Vietnam among others. He is a steady contributor for the Vietnamese contemporary art magazine Visual.
21: Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum

Acrylic, enamel, and rhinestones on wood enamel.
Brooklyn Museum, Gift of Giulia Borghese and Designated Purchase Fund, 2008.7a-c
2008-09-19 until 2009-12-31 // Brooklyn Museum of Art // Brooklyn, NY
More than forty works from the Brooklyn Museum's expanding collection of contemporary art will go on long-term view today in 5,000 square feet of space newly renovated for this purpose. With contemporary works ranging from Andy Warhol's Fragile Dress, 1966, to Mickalene Thomas's A Little Taste Outside of Love, 2007, 21: Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum will focus primarily on work produced since 2000, particularly from the richly diverse artistic community of Brooklyn. This installation marks the first time in a decade that the Museum has dedicated space to the long-term display of selections of its collection of contemporary art and reflects a renewed emphasis on the acquisition and presentation of recent works.
The Museum's director Arnold L. Lehman states, "The revitalized contemporary art program at Brooklyn is managed by an exceptional team of curatorial specialists under the leadership of Eugenie Tsai, the John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art. With the generous support of a number of the Museum's Trustees and friends, this team has already made remarkable progress in acquiring important new works with a particular emphasis on works made in the twenty-first century and created by artists of color. At the same time, our curators have taken a strong lead in the presentation of the Museum's dynamic exhibition program."
Among the recently acquired works in the contemporary installation will be a painting by the Miami-based artist Hernan Bas titled Night Fishing, which will also be included in the Museum's forthcoming exhibition on the artist, on view February 27-May 24, 2009; a sculpture by Kara Walker titled Burning African Village Play Set with Big House and Lynching, 2006, that explores racial stereotyping through imagery drawn from the antebellum South; the Brooklyn artist Valerie Hegarty's painting Fallen Bierstadt, inspired by the Museum's renowned work by Albert Bierstadt, A Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie; a mixed-media sculpture by the Jamaican artist Hew Locke titled Koh-i-Noor, similar to another version of the subject in the Museum's recent exhibition Infinite Island: Contemporary Caribbean Art; and twenty-five photogravures by Olafur Eliasson, a Danish artist, who is currently showing New York City Waterfall, a public art project on view in the East River. Other artists represented include Amy Sillman, Kiki Smith, Nari Ward, Chester Higgins Jr., Sol LeWitt, Kehinde Wiley, Terence Koh, Seher Shah, Simon Norfolk, Jules de Balincourt, Donald Judd, Claes Oldenburg, and Do-Ho Suh. A new installation of three wax sculptures by New York artist Petah Coyne will be on view in the fifth-floor lobby gallery August 6, 2008, through July 2009, to coincide with the opening of the new contemporary galleries. Two of the three sculptures are recent gifts that will be on view for the first time.
The Brooklyn Museum has collected contemporary art since the mid-nineteenth century when a bequest from Augustus Graham, one of the Museum's founders, endowed a "Gallery of Fine Arts" accompanied by funds allocated for the annual purchase of works of art by living American artists. In 1855 the initial commission went to Asher B. Durand, whose painting The First Harvest in the Wilderness inaugurated the Museum's collection. In the early twentieth century, the Museum continued to acquire contemporary art, and in 1934 it established a Department of Contemporary Art. Contemporary works were exhibited in galleries in the West Wing in the 1990s. Since 2001, contemporary art has been integrated into galleries throughout the Museum, especially in American Identities: A New Look.
The contemporary galleries installation is organized by Eugenie Tsai and Patrick Amsellem, Associate Curator of Photography. The Petah Coyne installation is organized by Tumelo Mosaka, Associate Curator of Exhibitions.
In addition to 21: Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum, two additional contemporary exhibitions will be presented this fall: Romantic Delusions: The Art of Jesper Just, on view September 19, 2008 through January 4, 2009, organized by Patrick Amsellem; and Gilbert & George, on view October 3, 2008 through January 11, 2009, coordinated by Judy Kim, Curator of Exhibitions.

Christiane Baumgartner: Screen Shot
2008-09-08 until 2008-10-08
Alan Cristea Gallery
London, UK
Christiane Baumgartner’s art is slow art, like slow cooking. It takes time to produce and it demands to be savoured and in those characteristics it seems to protest at the speed of the world. She may be fascinated by speed and enjoy the sense of liberation that accompanies it but she recognises its potential for destruction. This ambivalence lies at the heart of her work.’ Jeremy Lewison, ‘At the Still Point of the Turning World’. The Prints of Christiane Baumgartner, 2007, published by Johan Deumens, Haarlem. Christiane Baumgartner is best known for her monumental woodcuts based on her own films and video stills. She first came to public attention in the UK in EAST international in 2004 and a year later with a major solo exhibition at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham (with accompanying 80-page, fully illustrated hardback catalogue). Her work is held in over 30 public collections around the world including the Albertina, Vienna; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
Baumgartner is particularly interested in the passage of time; much of her work takes the form of diptychs or series of images depicting the same scene, taken seconds apart. The sheer scale of these works and the fact that she prints them herself in her studio makes them some of the most exciting and ambitious prints being made today. This exhibition will include new and recent woodcuts on varying scales, many of which will be shown for the first time. Formation I & II shows two frames isolated from a video which depict Second World War planes (I) and their shadow cast on the ground (II). Treffer continues this theme of war and destruction with four images of explosions. Brandenburg is a smaller work made especially for the exhibition which shows one of the artist’s classic images of a still from a journey on a motorway.
All these works demand viewing from a distance and yet the blurring of the horizontal lines seen close to is equally captivating. Baumgartner’s work often documents time, distance and speed and yet the results are still and contemplative. It is the combination of the ancient art of woodcut with contemporary digital technology which makes her practice so innovative.
