Various Artists - Brownswood Bubblers 3

Various Artists - Brownswood Bubblers 3

For me the bar was raised significantly last year when Gilles Peterson dropped Brownswood Bubblers 2. Now Brownswood Bubblers 1, the first compilation on Gilles new label had some tasty treats but Bubblers 2 was off the charts. I’m not certain that Bubblers 3 is on the same level but it’s not far off. Either way the Brownswood Bubblers series are the compilations that trumps all compilations. There are many excellent selections here as proof such as the soul funk club banger "Turn It Out" by Joey Negro and The Sunburst Band. "How Bout’ Us" by Katalyst is definitely one of the hottest cuts this year thanks to the voice of Steve Spacek. One of the best records I’ve heard that few know about is the ballad "Where would I Be" by Yaw who simply sounds like the second coming of Sam Cooke. Another highlight is the funky spoken word gem "Prayers for Angry Young Men" by Charlie Dark. Once again Gilles has shined the light on underground hits. Let’s hope that a larger audience will take notice. Highly recommended.

Green Gym Uses Human-Powered Energy

The opening of Portland’s The Green Microgym this week seems like a perfect complement to the announcement of M2E’s kinetic charger, which can generate energy from motion. Adam Boesel, The Green Microgym’s owner, doctored up spin bikes with weed whacker motors and truck alternators so that patrons can create energy to help power the 2,800 foot space.

According to DailyTech, the Team Dynamo and Spin Bikes at the gym can each generate up to 75 watts. Next on Boesel’s list is generating power from elliptical trainers.

At first, patrons will probably generate about 25 percent of the gym’s power. But Boesel hopes that eventually they will be to generate all of it.

The Green Microgym follows in the footsteps of Hong Kong’s California Fitness gym, which uses gym-goers’ energy to power light fixture.

XLR8R: Hercules, Love Affair & Teenage Nostalgia

Andy Butler went from being a bedroom disco-house producer to leading Hercules & Love Affair, an eight-piece band featuring three vocalists (Antony Hegarty, Nomi Ruiz, and Kim Ann Foxman) a two-man horn section, and Shayne Oliver, a legendary dancer in the New York voguing scene. Here, Butler talks about his path from being a teenage fanboy DJing in Denver gay bars to his current role as a rising New York art disco superstar.

Recloose - Perfect Timing

Sonar Kollektiv

Folks outside of Detroit and New Zealand may not be familiar with Matt Chicone aka Recloose but ever since his debut "This Is The Dining Room" on Carl Craig’s Planet E records, his talents as a DJ and producer have been in much demand. That was followed up with two outstanding records, "Cardiology" and "Hiatus On The Horizon”" His fourth lp, "Perfect Timing" is a lot more funkier than some of his previous releases but in many ways it is an extension of Matt Chicone’s burgeoning talents. It’s apparent that the objective of this record is to make you dance and there are several selections worthy of that goal. There is also the usual assortment of talented vocalists here as well. "Catch A Leaf" is a nice piece of broken soul that features newcomer Rachel Frasier. "Can It Be" is a rousing electronic funk stomper that should find it’s way to many dance floors. Joe Dukie has worked with Recloose before and on “Deeper Waters” he is in top form. This is easily one of the best dub tracks I’ve heard in a while and should become a big hit. Recloose may have caught us by surprise when he first came on the scene but we’re well aware of his skills now. This is another fine release and a great signing for Sonar Kollektiv.

Various Artists - Elaste Vol 2: Space Disco Compiled By Tom Wieland

Compost Records

This is a collection of spaced out post disco rarities hand picked by Tom Wieland, best known for his work as one half of 7 Samurai and Panoptikum, Tom has uncovered some cool electronic European gems. Some of the highlights are "Rebel On The Run" by Selection, a funk injected disco track, fueled by lively guitar work and a tight bass line. A nice boogie tune, "Take Time" by Jagg, that would easily fit into the Prelude catalogue. This was one of my favorites because of the soulful vocals, funky rhythm guitar and clever synths. "Feeling Love" by LEB Harmony has that electronic disco sound reminiscent of Cerrone from the late seventies. Not all the tracks measure up however, "Blow You Out Tonight" was just average and the vocals don’t do the track any justice. Out of place here is "Nepa Dance Dub." but it’s still a nice dub tune that provides a change of pace. All in all this is a nice foray into a collection of forgotten dance tracks that get a second life with new fans.

Colonel Red by Marc Kets

Colonel Red

Colonel Red is a singer, song-writer and performer with a clear understanding of his roots and the heritage of his ancestors on both sides of the Atlantic that result in a spiritual and learned take on modern soul music. His debut album “Blue Eye Blak” was released on People back in 2005 and since then while a lot of contemporaries have fallen away due to the close of Goya he has continued to rise above the presipice and release music that has found favour with tastemakers as renowned as Gilles Peterson who included a track of his on a Brownswood Bubblers compilation. His work fuses an original interplay between soul, acoustic and percussion all in a way that leads me to believe that Colonel Red is the real deal and someone who we will be hearing a lot more of in the years to come.

Stephanie McKay: Tell It Like It Is

Finally! We’ve been waiting over a year since the original release date but the sophomore project by Stephanie McKay is here. “Tell It Like It Is” is gritty no holds barred soul with a 70’s vibe. Not to mention the passion and intensity that we heard on her debut “McKay” in 2003. The disc starts with the title track in which she laments on the problems that surrounds her community in particular and in the world in general. She advises a young girl to avoid some of the mistakes she made at her age. The wah wah guitar is a perfect compliment to this funky track. “Jackson Avenue” is the perfect summertime jam.. It evokes images of kids playing in the street and relying on the fire hydrants sprouting cool water for relief from the heat. The compostion has a classic Holland-Dozier-Holland sound and would’ve fit in perfectly in the Motown catalogue sans the Eric B & Rakim samples that add spice to the track. “Where Did Our Love Go” is a sweet ballad that features soul crooner Anthony Hamilton. With just twelve tracks, this disc sticks to the strong material and lays off the filler. One year after the EP of the same name, Stephanie McKay delivers with a disc full of soulful tasty treats that touches on social issues and everyday life experiences. This certainly emerges as one of best records of 2008 and an much needed voice to breathe life into soul music.

The Days of Their Lives: Photographs by Seifollah Samadian

The Days of Their Lives: Photographs by Seifollah Samadian - absolutearts

2008-08-19 until 2008-09-12
Xerxes Fine Arts
London, UK

A series of extraordinary images documenting the lives of ordinary Iranians goes on show at Xerxes Fine Arts from August 19 through September 12, 2008. Seifollah Samadian's The Days of Their Lives explores the everyday existence of the Iranian populace, photographed as they participate in organised events and parades. At once haunting and provocative, the series of eighteen images reveals another face of Iran and offers a subtle socio-economic commentary on a world seldom seen by outsiders. Highly-regarded internationally as a cinematographer and art director as well as a photographer, who has worked with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Abbas Kiarostami, Samadian came to the forefront of critical attention in the wave of Iranian photography that gained momentum in the arts scene following the end of the Iran-Iraq war. In the drive to document events that followed, Samadian became Professor of Photojournalism at the University of Tehran and is today Publisher and Editor-in-chief of the Iranian cultural magazine, Tassvir.

Pascal Rousson: The House of Pain

Pascal Rousson: The House of Pain - absolutearts

2008-08-21 until 2008-09-14
Vegas Gallery
London, UK

For his first solo show, Swiss/French artist Pascal Rousson presents work which elaborates upon Museum of the Dispossessed, an installation previously exhibited at Vegas Gallery as part of the Loose Booty exhibition. Rousson's work ironically debunks the ideologies and values embedded in Modernist art. His current installation scavenges elements and themes from his own work, including flea market and charity shop paintings reworked with satirical references to canonical Western artists, an interest in the metaphorical potential of American pulp and amateur D.I.Y. craft-making manuals, and a preoccupation with the constricting myth of The Great Artist as Rock Star, destined to burn out and leave a trail of beautiful, history-altering corpses.

Museum of the Dispossessed incorporated paintings, which appropriated covers of the late 1960s D.I.Y. magazine Practical Householder. The paintings presented comical narratives that cast American modernist artists as self-obsessed bricoleurs with nameless and compliant female sidekicks, whose great works echo by the "low" aesthetics of amateur home improvement projects. Through juxtapositions of imagery and text within the canvas frames, and through their status as components of an installation rather than singular art objects, the paintings challenged the concept of art and artists as self-contained entities by foregrounding plural presences, influences and voices inhabiting the installation.

In his latest work Rousson extends the D.I.Y metaphor into darker territory. In the centre of the gallery stands a structure resembling a garden shed, constructed from a skin of closely packed paintings that mix references to canonical artists with American pulp novel cover art, teenage bedroom aesthetics and trippy pop surrealist-inflected imagery.

Traces of the artist as sinister loner, blazing comet and petty criminal reverberate through the structure. Rousson rams textual references to famous artists (Andy Warhol, Christopher Wool, Dan Flavin, and Sigmar Polke) against snippets of kitschy science-fiction landscapes that mock the hallowed inner-space model of artistic imagination, and lurid Russ Meyer style mannequins disrobing for virile men wielding palettes and paintbrushes in place of guns.

Corey Helford Gallery presents BUFF MONSTER “The Sweetest Thing”

Opening Reception Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 7 to 10pm
On View August 23 until September 2, 2008

Corey Helford Gallery 8522 Washington Boulevard Culver City, CA 90232 T: 310-287-2340 www.coreyhelfordgallery.com

Corey Helford Gallery is proud to present “The Sweetest Thing”, a solo exhibition of new works by Los Angeles street artist Buff Monster. Returning to the Gallery for his second solo show, Buff Monster’s “Pepto-pink” palette bursts into action with a kaleidoscope of geometric patterns, kaiju-inspired characters, and kanji translations of Buff Monsterism’s such as Lick It Up and Extra Creamy.

Inspired by Japanese fine art, pop culture, and anime, Buff Monster paints his trademark imagery in Superflat style, blending pink, black, and metallic silver shapes into an array of squirting scenes. Moving in a more technical direction, the series of paintings will be executed on custom birch panels in an assortment of sizes. A new limited-edition signed and numbered serigraph will be released on opening night.

Open to the public, the reception for “The Sweetest Thing” will take place on Saturday, August 23 from 7 to 10pm and will be on view until September 2, 2008. Influenced by heavy metal, porn, Japanese kawai culture, and ice cream, Buff Monster is known for changing the landscapes of Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Barcelona with his iconic Buff Monster character.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Buff Monster moved to Los Angeles and attended the University of Southern California where he earned degrees in Fine Art and Business Administration by day and postered the streets with his hand-screened posters by night. He has worked on projects with Nike, Vans, Hurley, The Standard Hotel, Vivid, and Hustler and collaborates with toy manufacturer Mindstyle to produce a series of collectible vinyl figures, which are released annually during Buff Fest.

Buff Monster has been featured in Juxtapoz, Artweek, The New York Times, Angeleno, LA Weekly, YRB, Vapors, XLR8R, mondomedeusah creative and many other publications. He has exhibited in numerous galleries nationally including Giant Robot (New York), Gallery 1988, New Image Art, OX-OP, and Andenken Gallery, and his work can be seen in Room 303 of San Francisco’s Hotel des Arts.

Synaesthesia: Alkistis Wechsler

Camaver Kunsthaus. Lake Como
Varenna,Italy

Synaesthesia is the title of the international contemporary art exhibition which will be presented by Camaver Kunsthaus International starting August 26 and continuing through September 2, 2008, in tow parts. Some of the newest creation of the best known contemporary artists will be showed. The exhibition title refers to a typical figure of speech, a sort of metaphor used in poetry and literature, that put together two different sensory spheres. For psychology it also means a mingling of the five senses during the reality perceiving.

Ilya Volykhine: All That's Left and Then Some

2008-08-06 until 2008-08-30
Groundfloor Gallery
Balmain,Australia

Groundfloor Gallery features Balmain local resident artist, Ilya Volykhine's latest exhbition of figurative oils in, All That's Left & Then Some on now through the 30th of August 2008. In All That's Left & Then Some, Volykhine uses a combination of oils and paper (archival copies of personal letters from his mother still in Russiain Cyrillic) on panel. The artistʼs versatile use of different expressive media is directly connected to the kaleidoscope of cultures that coexist in his personality: born in the Soviet Union, he has led a mobile existence in Russia, USA and most recently Australia; between the polymorphic vitality of Russian culture and the New York “melting pot” he delves into the idea of the accidental nature of the world as creative force, maintaining a detachment with respect to subjects and materials that allows him to freely explore and express his experience of the world in painting.

His works often evoke his own physical presence, his body seen as an instrument through which a relationship of osmosis is established between the creative Self and the rest of the world: the artist is his own body through which, in a constant interplay of inner and outer, physical and psychic, relations are created among different cultures, histories, people and thoughts. They are characterised by luminous vivid colours, or streaky browns set over bright backgrounds and the artistsʼ unique iconography infused with both memories of Russian literature and popular culture.

The exhibition title All That's Left & Then Some refers to the his constant use and re-use of historically significant and also mundane iconography and highlights many of the works, including portraits and the human figure, rural landscapes and urban cityscapes, and conceptual approaches to the figurative – that speak to the continuing power of painting.

Oliver Rodriguez-Kroll: Zirkus Stalin Zirkus Hollywood

2008-08-15 until 2008-09-13
Pool Gallery
Berlin,Germany

Oliver Rodriguez-Kroll is primarily concerned with the darker sides of human existence - with both individual, relatively innocuous pain as well as with the limitless frenzy pervading the history of humanity. Stories of perpetrators, victims, followers... looking to artistically de-demonise the day-to-day madness, Oliver Rodriguez-Kroll constantly uncovers new findings: ranging from storm troopers out of the Star Wars saga (of which he had, as a child, gathered up to 300 plastic figurines in his room) to antique tin soldiers, disused lifestyle magazines and faded posters. All of these are a source of inspiration, templates or material for collages; they prompt him to counter the pervading contemporary banalisation of social issues with irony.

Inevitable Injury - Pixeljunk Eden, Soul Calibur IV, Pineapple Express

This week in Movies:

Can Judd Apatow and his post-Freaks & Geeks Ap-Pack continue their run of comedy hits? Alex, Dan, and Jeff spark up Pineapple Express to find out if it is da kine.

David Fincher and Brad Pitt are teaming up once again for the high-concept film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The guys go gaga for the artful trailer.

This week in Video Games:

The Soul Calibur fighting game series has always been one of the deepest, and most visually impressive. The newest addition, Soul Calibur IV is the first for the current generation of consoles, and includes characters from the Star Wars universe. Can it revitalize the waning fighter genre?

The third Pixeljunk release on PSN is a genre-bending puzzler that just might be one of the most original, engaging, addicting, and well-designed games ever made. Alex, Dan, and Jeff get their grimp on and fall for Pixeljunk Eden.

Ludus: Curated by Basak Malone

NY Arts Beijing
Beijing, China

Ludus is a combination of Western psychology and thought within an Eastern setting. Investigating how representations of "the other" are not fixed or anchored in any single meaning, but invented and re-contextualized across a diverse signifying field that is indecipherable. Through semantic play participating artists are invited to address the space between themselves and others, sites that include, but are not limited to the concept of "the borderline," the "in-between," "the similacrum," and other "liminal spaces". Each of the artist's work spans a dynamic scope of inspirations and influences.

Giant Robot, LA: Susie Ghahremani (08.16 - 09.17)

Giant Robot, LA: Susie Ghahremani

THE WILD LIFE
the artist's fifth solo show will feature an extensive collection of over 100 never-before-seen miniature paintings surrounded by a hand-crafted aerial installation. The three-dimensional aspect of the gallery installation will allow visitors to physically experience the world she creates in her paintings for the first time. In this show the subjects of Ghahremani's animal world take on human qualities finding visible comfort in the homes they have built.
The "home life" of a variety of species will be depicted in the collection, including a wide range of dogs, birds and her renowned owls. The theme of this exhibit is heavily inspired by Ghahremani's personal experience volunteering as a wildlife rehabilitator in San Diego, CA. The exhibition is largely composed of gouache paintings on wood tile and wood blocks.  Her work reflects her signature craft-inspired sensibility with dotted lines that mimic stitching and backgrounds that evoke textiles and quilting.

About Susie Ghahremani

Her artwork has appeared in The New York Times, Nickelodeon Magazine, Martha Stewart Kids, and has most recently been featured in work for Chronicle Books, Bank of America, Target Corporation and the highly acclaimed nature book I LOVE DIRT. She has received art awards from American Illustration, the Alternative Pick, and Giant Robot.

PixelPerfect: Add Magic to Photoshop

In a two part episode, Bert shows us how to create an enchanted dagger and cover. This week, Bert begins by making the enchanted dagger's majestic handle.

Bert creates the shape of the dagger by using the pen tool as a mask. Bert adds texture to the main body of the handle (to create a pearl effect) by using various filters, such as Filter-Render-Fibers (adjusting variance and strength), Filter-Blur-Gaussian Blue, Filter-Blur-Motion Blur, inner shadow layer style and dodge tool for a lightened edge.

To create the golden tip of the handle, Bert creates a new layer and makes the shape using the elliptical tool, filling it with a golden color. To add various tones to the tip, Bert uses the dodge and burn tool.

For the side handles, Bert creates the shape using the pen tool as a mask, filling it with a golden color and implementing various effects. Bert duplicates the layer to add dimension and uses the Satin layer style, dodge and burn tool and filter-blur-gaussian blur (to remove the hard edge of the top layer)

To make a gem for the dagger, Bert creates a small red circle, adds noise (filter-noise) and adds a crystal effect (filter-pixilate-cystalize) and drop shadow layer style.

FInally, Bert adds a symbol for the handle using an image previously made in Illustrator and adjusting the opacity, and adding a bevel/emboss and inner shadow layer style.
