Call for Artists: Uncommon Thread Wearable Art Show

2007-07-23 until 2007-09-17
Baton Rouge Gallery
Baton Rouge, LA, USA United States of America

Culturecandy.org and Baton Rouge Gallery have teamed up to support the capital city's latest effort to stimulate and engage the artistic mass with the Uncommon Thread Wearable Art Show. By merging fashion design and visual art, this juried regional competition encourages entries from all disciplines, supports collaboration and provides a unique and accessible arena for artists to display their talent. Uncommon Thread is a chance to use the fusion between fine art and fashion as way to boldly demonstrate one's artistry for a broad audience.

Juried by Louisiana's own Suzanne Perron, formally of Vera Wang, the competition awards sound craftsmanship, but focuses on innovative design, dramatic detail and use of alternative materials in the creation of a full-bodied piece of art. Those placed in first, second and third will receive cash prizes. All accepted entries will be presented in a stage performance choreographed by the Cangelosi Dance Project.

To be held October 12, 2007, 8 p.m. at David Cano's workshop 521 N. 19th Street, the exhibition promises to be a one-of-a-kind event. Music provided by a collaboration between DJ Gabriel Saint and a string quartet led by violinist Joanna Steinhauser will take the theme of fusion even further.

Though this event is facilitated locally by the wealth of talent stirring in Baton Rouge, the call for entry is not limited to Louisiana or the southeast. Uncommon Thread is eager to connect artists from across the country.

Entrants are encouraged to visit the website to learn more about wearable art, our supporters and how to hem themselves into this Uncommon Thread.

Submission deadline for digital images is September 17, 5 p.m. to be sent to uncommon.thread.br@gmail.com or mailed to Baton Rouge Gallery, Attn: Uncommon Thread, 1442 City Park Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70808. For entry forms visit www.uncommonthreadbr.com

On antitrust, is Google the next Microsoft?

Not too long ago, nearly every move that Microsoft made seemed to draw complaints that the company was abusing its market dominance. Now another market-leading technology company is under fire in Washington as well. An unlikely combination of onetime antitrust defendants like Microsoft and AT&T and liberal consumer groups that have been their traditional antagonists are taking aim at Google.Interviews by CNET News.com last week show that Microsoft and its occasional allies have met separately with key congressional committees that deal with consumer protection and antitrust issues--both of which announced last week that they will hold hearings on Google's plan to spend $3.1 billion to buy DoubleClick.

mondomedeusah music: Kevin Michael - YaDig?

Blogkevinmichael

YaDig? EP
Kevin Michael

Online
Released: Apr 10, 2007
Released By Downtown / Atlantic Records

Kevin Michael is a 22-year old vocal prodigy from Philadelphia with a formidable voice and persona and was featured on The Roots’ recent greatest hits album, 'Home Grown!' Kevin could garner comparisons to a young, Off The Wall-ear Michael Jackson, a rule-breaking innovator like Prince or a classic soul crooner like Curtis Mayfield, but he is definitely on his own trip. Especially when he plays live where he is accompanied by Akil Dasan, a BET freestyle champion who plays acoustic guitar, beat-boxes and raps. The duo recently performed a series of acoustic showcases in NYC, LA and SF to frenzied crowds.

The Kevin Michael buzz is about to reach new heights with the recent release of his iTunes-exclusive EP, 'YaDig?' The irresistibly melodic head-bopping standout “We All Want The Same Thing” introduces Michael to the masses and pairs him with the talented MC Lupe Fiasco. Another pick, the spare and intimate “It Don’t Make Any Difference” features his partner in crime, Akil Dasan. In addition to Lupe, the full-length album will feature guest appearances by Q-Tip and Wyclef Jean and production work by urban producers including Wyclef Jean, LRoc (Lil Jon, Mariah Carey), Bloodshy (Madonna) and The Clutch (Usher). With a song featured in the upcoming Entourage series & the show’s soundtrack and with support from the independent label behind the commercial and critical success of Gnarls Barkley's platinum and Grammy award-winning 'St. Elsewhere,' Kevin Michael is sure to be turning a lot of heads very soon.

mondomedeusah music: Little Voice - Sara Bareilles

Sara Bareilles

Little Voice
Sara Bareilles

CD
Release date: Jul 3, 2007
Released By Epic Records

With a sizeable underground following Sara Bareilles (pronounced Bar-rell-is) is proving to be one of the year’s most promising new artists. It’s tempting to liken her to Norah Jones or Fiona Apple, but Sara’s sound goes further into another direction. Influenced by soul, jazz, rock and pop, her writing is bold, honest and edgy. She writes intelligent, unpredictable lyrics and melodies that she delivers courtesy of a truly soulful and powerful voice. Having no formal training in voice or piano, Sara spent her adolescence at a worn piano teaching herself chords and scribbling out simple melodies and lyrics. At the young age of 21, she co-produced her first independent studio demo, Careful Confessions which led to a signing with Epic Records in 2005.

Sara’s eagerly anticipated debut album, Little Voice is set for release this summer, but you can get a taste of the songstress now through an digital EP available online and on iTunes with each of these three tracks giving a unique taste of what lies ahead. “Love Song,” the first single off the album, has a pop-y, infectious melody telling the story about love’s challenges. On the edgy Fiona Apple-likened, “Bottle It Up” Sara goes back to her piano roots and finally on “Gravity,” she shines on a haunting, intimate piano / vocal ballad. Sara is fast approaching the next level in her career, having toured with Maroon 5, Ben Folds, and Aqulaung, and will be on the road again supporting Mika in June. Just when you think everything’s been done in music someone like Sara comes along with a genuinely fresh artistic voice to remind you why you’ve always loved music so much in the first place.

Fiber optic tablecloth: the new candlelit dinner

We highly doubt LumiGram's Luminous Fiber Optic Tablecloth was designed with power outages in mind, but why hook up a boring string of lamps or fiddle with half melted candles when you can plug this bad boy into the generator?
