Ishiuchi Miyako: mothers

2007-05-24 until 2007-06-16
Art Gallery of New South Wales
Sydney, AU Australia
Ishiuchi, one of Japan’s leading contemporary photographers, will be the focus for an exhibition entitled mother’s and will comprise 68 photos relating to her recently deceased mother. Ishiuchi was the artist chosen to represent Japan at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005. The moving series of photographs she exhibited at Venice was acclaimed as one of the Biennale highlights. The images are disturbingly poignant, personal and intimate. Ishiuchi’s early oeuvre focuses on buildings and street scenes, but in 1990 she shifted to photographs of the human form, starting with the group of works entitled 1•9•4•7, which featured close-up photographs of the hands and feet of women born the same year as Ishiuchi (1947). The artist’s own words in the accompanying catalogue illuminate her continuing preoccupations with time and decay: 'The hands, feet and face are always exposed to the air that surrounds the body and thus are subject to gradual destruction by the elements and time. The body, like a vessel which only receives what is given into it, accepts whatever time and the elements do to it. Things that make a body unique seem to gather at the extremes of the body.' read more

Source: Adam & Eve
by: Company Press Release
(HILLSBOROUGH, NC) -- Adam & Eve, the nation’s number one choice for all things erotic, has pulled its advertisements from Xm Radio’s "Opie & Anthony Show" following the duo’s 30 day suspension in censorship protest.
"We support free speech… not censorship," explains Adam & Eve Director of Marketing Chad Davis. "Adam & Eve was built on First Amendment rights. We cannot, in good conscience, ignore the fact that ‘Opie & Anthony’ were suspended over comments that the FCC has no jurisdiction over."

"We’ve received word that thousands of customers have cancelled their subscriptions to Xm Radio over this," says Davis. "It’s obvious that America is taking the issue of free speech seriously."

Razor-thin TV screen you can wear as a T-shirt

In the race for ever thinner displays for TVs, cell phones and other gadgets, Sony may have developed one to beat them all - a razor-thin display that bends like paper while showing full-colour video.
Sony Corporation posted video of the new 2.5 inch display on its' web page.
In the video, a hand squeezes the 0.3 millimetre (0.01 inch)-thick display, which shows color video of a bicyclist stuntman, a picturesque lake and other images.
Sony will present the research and video at an academic symposium in Long Beach, California, for the Society for Information Display this week, the Japanese electronics and entertainment company said.
The display combines Sony's organic thin film transistor, or TFT, technology, which is required to make flexible displays, with another kind of technology called organic electroluminescent display, it said.
The latter technology is not as widespread for gadgets as the two main display technologies now on the market - liquid crystal displays and plasma display panels.
Although flat-panel TVs are getting slimmer, a display that's so thin it bends in a human hand marks a breakthrough. read more

Brain-eating zombies invade SF Apple store

A horde of decaying zombies invaded San Francisco's downtown Apple store on Friday evening, hunting for brains, terrifying the customers, and gnawing on iMacs.
It was difficult to judge the exact number of zombies that shuffled through the city's shopping district, losing limbs, blood, and unmentionable body parts along the way, but probably at least 150 converged on Union Square. Then they decided to visit nearby businesses, including the Apple store, Nordstrom, the Disney store, and the Westfield Mall. read more
