KYLE EASTWOOD and LISET ALEA live...

KYLE EASTWOOD+ LISET ALEALive at the Jazz Cafe

Wednesday 31st January

doors 7pm

£17.50 advance

Kyle Eastwood grew up in Carmel California. His first memories are of jazz and of his father, Clint Eastwood, taking him to the Monterey Jazz Festival as a child. While doing his homework, Kyle remembers listening to records of jazz stars such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Miles Davis playing in the house.

Like any child raised by enthusiastic jazz loving parents, an awareness and love of music soaks in quickly. There was something magnetic about watching someone play for an audience that completely captivated the young Kyle.

Kyle’s first memory of playing music was when Clint taught him how to play the left hand bass line of Boogie Woogie while he played the right hand solo over the top. By the age of eighteen, Kyle was jamming with his schoolmates in Pebble Beach and learning Led Zepplin and Motown bass lines by ear. It was only in 1986, two years into a film studies major at USC, that Kyle realized that music was his true passion. He took off what he thought would only be a year to pursue music, and has not looked back since.

Having dabbled on electric bass as a teenager, he now also plays the upright, acoustic and double bass. After years of paying his dues gigging around New York and Los Angeles, Kyle finally struck a deal with Sony who released his first album From There To Here in 1998 which features the vocal talent of Joni Mitchell. The album is an upbeat collection of jazz standards and original music and was critically well received.

At the end of August 2004, Kyle signed to one of the leading independent jazz labels in the UK, Candid Records who are also responsible for bringing Jamie Cullum and Clare Teal to the nation’s attention. It was through Candid that Kyle came in contact with Dave Koz’s label Rendezvous Entertainment. Kyle signed on with Rendezvous to release his future albums in the United States.

In 2004, Kyle released his second album entitled Paris Blue. Kyle had been working on the album while living in Paris with his own family and this album was more personal with contributions from his father and his daughter who actually wrote and recorded the introduction to the title track when she was only 9 years old. Paris Blue resonates with swing, groove, and funk overtones. Kyle says, “My roots remain in jazz but I like adding all kinds of different flavors.” The album climbed to #1 on the French Jazz charts.

NOW is Kyle’s latest and most ambitious album.

Kyle Eastwood - Bass
Michael Stevens - Keyboard / Guitar / vocals
Andrew McCormack - Piano
Graeme Flowers - Trumpet
Graeme Blevin - Saxophone
Martyn Kaine - Drums

{music} mondomedeusah recommends: Shawn Lee vs. Nino Moschella "Kiss The Sky" b/w "Holding On"

London-based producer extraordinaire Shawn Lee teams up with California crooner Nino Moschella to create an EP of cinematic, electronic folksy soul. Packed with collaborations, remixes, exclusive tracks, and album previews the EP includes an anthemic soundtrack-inspired remix by Warp Records producer Mark Pritchard (aka Harmonic 33, Troubleman etc).

"Kiss The Sky" is from the forthcoming Shawn Lee album, Voices and Choices, due out in early 2006 and features Nino Moschella's vocals riding a vintage Lee moody down tempo track. "Song For David" is also from the upcoming Voices and Choices and sees Shawn Lee in David top Axelrod-like form with a stunning instrumental track complete with big dramatic strings and fat drums. Shawn Lee remixes Nino Moschella's "Holding On" taken from the Moschella debut album The Fix, and also included is the breezy acoustic soul vibe of "You Never Came", yet another exclusive to this EP that's completely unavailable anywhere else.

Nino Moschella's debut album has been called an "absolute classic" (Gilles Peterson), "essential" (CMJ), and "the record Stevie Wonder should have made after Songs In The Key Of Life" (See Magazine). Since it's release he has played alongside James Brown, Leela James and Dr John and opened for the Greyboy Allstars.

Shawn Lee has recently completed his forth Ping Pong Orchestra album for Ubiquity which is set for release in January 2006. Called Voices and Choices Lee steps out with guest vocals in addition to the customary soundtrack-style instrumental tracks. Lee's music has recently been featured in TV campaigns for BMW and Jaguar plus many TV shows and films. Mutual admirers of each others work the Lee/Moschella collaborations came about organically, and these tracks will not be the last we hear of the two working together.

Rage Against the Machine will reunite for Coachella

Rage Against the Machine, the seminal L.A. band that made heavy music into political manifesto, will reunite after a seven-year lull for one show as the headliners at the 2007 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Sources say Rage, which played the main stage at the first Coachella in 1999, will be joined by other familiar faces for the eighth edition of the festival, which covers three days this year and begins April 27: Red Hot Chili Peppers, which headlined in 2003, are back, as is Björk, who topped the bill in 2002.

Organizers were mum this weekend and it was not clear which day Rage or the other acts were slotted to play; that announcement is expected in the next few days. Other acts expected in the eclectic lineup: Arcade Fire, Interpol, Willie Nelson, the Roots, Manu Chao, the Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Crowded House, Air, Tiësto and Kings of Leon.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, via Ticketmaster. Three-day passes will cost about $250 and there will be a limited number of single-day passes available.

The headliners are not novel, but they are potent. The Peppers are up for their first best album Grammy right now, and Björk remains a mesmerizing figure to fans of avant pop. But in Southern California rock circles, there is very little that could compete with the excitement of a Rage Against the Machine reunion. The quartet's hybrid of funk, rap, metal and leftist ideology was as subtle as a Molotov cocktail; in the 1990s, its aggro-anthems made it the only band that mattered to a fan base that included East L.A. protest kids as well as those in Hollywood punk circles, college dorms and mainstream rock festival mosh pits, where politics were secondary to the group's feral energy.

The band is vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk. Their split came amid rumors of bad blood between De la Rocha and his mates, who went on to work with Chris Cornell in Audioslave. However, Morello and De la Rocha appeared together at a 2005 rally for the urban farmers of a South Los Angeles community garden.

DJ Greyboy

Out Now! "Soul Mosaic" the latest Greyboy album, recorded 10 years after the release of "Freestylin'," the first Greyboy full-length album for Ubiquity. The tracks crafted into this fourth Greyboy album include groundbreaking territory for the Southern California based producer/DJ. For the first time he has recorded full vocal songs adding a new soulful dimension to his music. The trademark laid-back West Coast Greyboy beats remain central to "Soul Mosaic" but are now enhanced by collaborations that took place over the past two years.

A decade ago "Freestylin'" became a surprise underground hit, it was a
building block of the early acid jazz movement and still holds cult status today. Since then Greyboy has released the equally jazz-based instrumental "Land of the Lost" and the soundtrack and hip hop inspired "Mastered The Art," which featured musicians and MCs in a prelude to the "Soul Mosaic" album.

Greyboy has recorded with AG (Showbizz and AG), and the Greyboy All stars (whom he helped put together and produce). His music has been featured in movies like Get Shorty, Celtic Pride, The Kelly Slater Surf Pro video game, Budweiser commercials, and he was handpicked to provide a mix CD for DC shoes in 2003.

OHMEGA WATTS

With a humble B-Boy swagger and original hip hop values Ohmega Watts first release on Ubiquity was a soulful and DJ friendly solo 12” featuring his group Lightheaded and Quannum Recording Artists The Lifesavas. “A Request” was an up tempo J5 party-style hip-hop banger with beats to rock dancefloors from coast to coast. While “Illuminate” provided a smoother buttery sound, and “Wind It Up” an instrumental mid-tempo flava…Most of the music on this 12” came together in a live, random, spur of the moment session. “A Request” turned heads worldwide including internationally respected DJs like Mr. Scruff, Gilles Peterson, Greyboy, and the Los Angeles-based Heavyweight Record Pool. Earning comparisons to Digital Underground and Pete Rock it also scored Ohmega Watts an album deal with Ubiquity.

“That Sound” is the massive follow-up single to his 2004 sell-out debut. It features up n’coming West Coast MCs the Procussions with Noelle from The Rebirth on the hook. The Quantic Soul Orchestra step up with a super tasty funk remix. “That Sound” is a bouncy party track sounding like vintage Tribe Called Quest or Leaders of The New School ala 'Scenario.' The Quantic Soul Orchestra mix has an infectious summer funk vibe, with instantly catchy guitar licks and Hammond organ adding a wicked organic vibe.
Producing since 1997 and MC’ing since 1993 the Ohmega Watts resume includes tracks produced for Mars Ill on Ill Boogie, for Listener on Mush, plus he’s recorded as Lightheaded for Day By Day Ent, and as Return To Sender on the Piece of The Action compilation. Hailing from Flatbush, Brooklyn, brought-up by Jamaican parents Campbell moved to Florida for college and then settled in Portland, Oregon. He is now part of a bustling North West independent scene that includes the Lifesavas (who appeared on his debut single), Boom Bap, Soul Plasma, Libretto, Lightheaded and The Blacknotes.

Ubiquity

Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra Voices and Choices

In Shawn Lee’s world Ennio Morricone dances with Esquivel and Serge Gainsbourg as spaghetti western guitars and harmonicas ride fat drum breaks accompanied by vibes, lush strings, and piano. On Voices and Choices Lee's signature style moody instrumentals are accompanied by vocals for the first time in the four albums he has recorded for Ubiquity. In addition to a handful of full songs, instrumental tracks are decorated with vocal textures in a nod to classic producers David Axelrod and Charles Stepney who used choir-like walls of vocal to create their big productions.

Ubiquity label mate Nino Moschella joins Lee on the rock n’soul epic “Kiss The Sky”, while Ohmega Watts waxes positive lyrical on “The Glass Hour Effect.” Instrumentals “JW” and “Song For David” are just begging for an accompanying movie to match the cinematic sounds, while “Tense Bossa” and “Glass Act” feature subtle vocal parts to heighten the spy-theme tension.

Zune: How We've Lived With It For Three Months

After the iPod came out on top in our Zune v. iPod battle royale, we decided to keep on using the Zune so we could get a long term evaluation on how Microsoft's player stacked up. After nearly three months with the thing, we think we've got some new light to shed.

First off, we have to say that the subscription service is great. This is probably the main reason why many people wanted to make the switch to the Zune from the iPod. Being able to hop online and download as many songs as you want off their library is extremely freeing, in the same sense as walking in your underwear at your in-laws' house and letting one rip.

Hear a song in a movie and you want it? Well, you've already paid for a subscription so go ahead and download it for free. This pays off if you buy at least one CD a month, but comes with the restriction that you lose everything if you stop paying—or if the Zune store tanks.

Actually listening to songs on the Zune has been fine as well. The larger-than-iPod size is negligible (for us). The battery life is pretty great, seeing as we only listen to music in the car and only occasionally on foot. Even compared to the iPod at three months, the Zune keeps charge longer when not in use.

{music} Weed Diggers

Dear groove gang: how is the new year rolling for all ya'll? Probably dandy. Especially considering the lovely fact that electro/disco titan John Digweed is gearing up to road-trip all over this fine country, bringing loud beats and good times to good people everywhere. This extra-special spring stint spans the majority of the month of March, and covers these key states: Texas, Missouri, Louisiana, and Tennessee. So start freeing up your schedule now, because nobody wants to hear any of your excuses later. Brought to you courtesy of the philanthropic folks over at Disco Productions, this 2007 Digweed live leg will likely rank high in his already-dense history of great gigs and life-affirming musical adventures. So get siked, get ready, spread the word, get tickets, mount up, roll out, and bring it in. Over and out, everybody.

Oh, the saga of Digweed. It's far too expansive to chart properly, but in bold strokes it goes like this: unlikely 15 year old acid house aficionado in Hastings, England starts deejaying in local clubs. Fast forward. Internationally renowned re-mixer of chart-toppers like New Order and Quincy Jones is voted number one DJ in the world by DJ Magazine in their 2001 poll. Between points A and B he launched a record label and a production company, traveled to play sets in six of the planet's seven continents (Antarctica's clubbing scene is still sparse), and won the acclaim and love of literally millions of fans. Wow.

And, of course, this is merely scratching the surface of Digweed's accomplishments. He's had tracks on smash movie soundtracks (Trainspotting), fully scored films (Stark Raving Mad), done some acting himself (Groove), and shared tours with some not-entirely-small musical artists such as Moby and Mr. David Bowie. But his endlessly inventive style and charismatic aura in performance continue to win him new accolades and unbelievable opportunities. And the dude deserves it. The least you could do is show up, listen to his music, party with tens of thousands of excited people, and be utterly amazed.
