Gustav Metzger: Works
2006-05-20 until 2006-08-27
Lund Konsthall
Lund, , SE Sweden
In the exhibition Gustav Metzger: Works Lund Konsthall presents the work Karba for the first time. Karba was intended for Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972, but was never realised. The work consists of four cars placed around a large plastic cube, where their exhaust fumes are collected. The work will become more and more blackened as the exhibition goes on. Karba is a vigorous sculpture, a protest against the continued pollution of the environment, a study of a protracted physical process. Gustav Metzgers first Manifesto for an Auto-Destructive Art from 1959 proved directional for one of the most uncompromising artistic careers in our time. Auto-destructive art is made to be self-destroyed. The act of destruction is crucial to the work.
Gustav Metzger was born in Nuremberg in 1926 to a Polish-Jewish family, but he has lived and worked in England his entire adult life. He was among the earliest environmental activists, protesting against increased motoring and extensive traffic construction in London already in the 1940s. He was also among the founders of the movement against nuclear weapons, and like Bertrand Russell he was jailed for his early protests. Gustav Metzger's manifesto for auto-destructive art from 1959 and his actions, symposia and lectures were important events on the British avant-garde scene of the 1960s.
Politics and actions have been central to Gustav Metzger's artistic practice. A growing interest in his work has resulted in several exhibitions in recent years. The exhibition in Lund contains both earlier 'autodestructive' works and new productions.
F L E S H by Thaweesak Srithongdee: New Works by the Thai Artist
2006-05-20 until 2006-06-11
Thavibu Gallery
Bangkok, , TH Thailand
Thavibu Gallery is pleased to present the art exhibition F L E S H by Thaweesak Srithongdee with new works by the Thai artist on20May -11 June, 2006. Thaweesak Srithongdeeis36 years old with a Master of Fine Art degree from Silapakorn University, Thailand's mainart education institution. He has taken part in exhibitions in Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain and Singapore as well as Thailand, and this is his second solo show at Thavibu Gallery. He recently returned from a residency at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum inJapan where he also participated in the Fukuoka Triennale.
Thaweesak is a keen observer of people, their traits and physical and mental characters. Using his imagination, he goes on to ponder whether people's looks are related to their behaviour, culture, social standing and other aspects. The result is a series of pop-erotic paintings where his works are filled with symbols and show his interpretations of and feeling towards other human beings. As viewers react differently to various symbols, he expects people to see his works in a variety of ways using different interpretations.
Thavibu Gallery Co. Ltd. is an Art Gallery for quality paintings. The Gallerys objective is to promote quality art, particularly from Thailand , Vietnam and Burma , hence the name Thavibu Gallery. The emphasis is on young and upcoming artists whose works express and communicate the imaginative aspects of their culture and reflect concerns that range broadly from the spiritual and aesthetic to the social and political. The Gallery also carries some other artworks, mainly

Pacific Encounters - Art and divinity in Polynesia 1760-1860
2006-05-21 until 2006-08-13
Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts
Norwich, , UK United Kingdom
The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia, Norwichreopens on Sunday, May 21following amajor refurbishment and building project, designed by Foster & Partners. Pacific Encounters - Art and divinity in Polynesia 1760-1860, is the launch exhibition. Pacific Encounters runs from Sunday, May 21 to Sunday 13 August. Britain holds the most comprehensive 18th and 19th century Polynesian collections in the world, yet much of this material is little-known and seldom exhibited. Pacific Encounters brings together for the first time important material from collections in Britain and abroad, for the largest and most comprehensive exhibition ever mounted on Polynesia.
Presenting 270 rare and extraordinary sculptures, ornaments, textiles and valuables, the exhibition will explore Polynesia during a dynamic period in its history - the era of early contact with European voyagers, missionaries and traders. Constructed from sumptuous materials - feathers, ivory, jade, pearl shell and sharks teeth many of the objects had important roles to play in Polynesian religion and culture.
They range from massive temple images - temporary embodiments of gods - to chiefly regalia, to objects with highly effective technical functions, for example fish hooks and stone-bladed tools. Polynesians had no metal before European arrival, yet with tools of stone, shell and shark tooth they carved enormous double canoes and major works of art. On display for the first time will be a 4m canoe composed of 45 sections of wood tied together with coconut husk fibre cord - collected in 1767 during the voyage of HMS Dolphin.
The story of the collectors is also told. Who were they, and what motivated their collecting? Included are many artefacts from all three of Captain Cooks voyages (1768-1780), and works collected on the voyages of Captain Bligh, Captain Vancouver (after whom the city is named) and many others. The exceptional collections of the London Missionary Society, held in the British Museum, are also well represented.
Polynesians continue to have a vibrant living culture and this exhibition explores an important part of their history while extending appreciation of one of the worlds great but little-known art traditions. The exhibition will be shown in both temporary exhibitions spaces, and will also inaugurate the new link exhibition space in the refurbished Sainsbury Centre. The British Museum, from whom some 120 items are being borrowed, is a major partner in the project.
From gorgeous Hawaiian feather cloaks to exquisite Tahitian fish hooks, there will be something in this exhibition for everyone to enjoy. Polynesian art deserves to be widely appreciated, and there is no better place to show it than the Sainsbury Centre. Steven Hooper, exhibition curator.
Sainsbury Centre Director, Nichola Johnson said: We are reopening The Sainsbury Centre with a brilliant exhibition. Much of the material in Pacific Encounters has never been seen before in public. Our status as a university museum has given us the opportunity to create an international ground-breaking exhibition in Norwich, which combines serious academic research with fabulous eye-catching displays.
Pacific Encounters is part of a research project, Polynesian Visual Arts: meanings and histories in Pacific and European cultural contexts sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The exhibition is a British Museum Partnership UK project. British Museum Press will be publishing a fully-illustrated catalogue to coincide with the exhibition.

A ‘Broadtail’ of two Cities
Russian broadtail worn with broadtail city shorts
Remember one year ago when New York furrier Dennis Basso presented his wonderfully eccentric and cross cultural collection of furs and ready to wear? Unabashedly colorful, embroidered, mirrored, studded, beaded, bejeweled, and embellished, it marked a true departure for the designer who initially put himself on the map with rather traditional if not somewhat predictable uptown/glam furs, fur trims, and fur accessories. With jeans and slouchy bags added to impart the desired mood, it was homage to boho chic, or as Jack Cohen, Managing Director of the Dennis Basso Salon, so perfectly summed it up, “Rich girl who lives in the mountains of Tibet” (To which I jokingly said, oh, like Lizzie Grubman?”)
Russian broadtail trimmed with ostrich feathers
Well, surprise, surprise. One year later, gone is anything remotely bohemian, or that mountain in Tibet for that matter. In fact, for fall 2006, Dennis’s loyal following will be thinking more about Paris because according to Jack Cohen, it’s all about “French glamour”. When I asked who Dennis’s muses or inspirations were, Jack was quick to say, “Leslie Caron” (in the 60’s) and Louise Brooks”. And he effused, “The workmanship you have to see. The workmanship is extraordinary! We have new techniques for EVERYTHING. It’s all about broadtail. We’ve split it, we’ve sueded it, we’ve embroidered it!”.
And he was certainly right about that. In fact, other than a few Natural minks, Black velvet chinchillas, and a smattering of Montana lynx bellies (a coat and a jacket), Russian broadtail (in one carnation or another) comprised almost all of the of the other 43 looks that were presented at The New York Public Library’s Astor Hall (the venue for the second year in a row).
Russian broadtail ‘trench’ outlined with black tulle
Broadtail, (a pelt favored by designers because it’s so perfect for tailoring, easy to work with, and practically seasonless), was indeed sueded, hand embroidered with Swarovski crystals, trimmed with coq or ostrich feathers, trimmed with ribbon, made into city shorts or skinny pants, fashioned into a hand embroidered wide obi belt to mark the waist of a coat or jacket, and even used to make an evening bag.
Among the standouts are the Russian broadtail jacket with handmade broadtail lace sleeves worn with Russian broadtail city shorts; a Russian broadtail coat with hand embroidered ostrich feather detail on the hem and sleeves; a Russian broadtail jacket with Swarovski hand embroidery and ribbon, lace, and tulle details; an ivory Russian broadtail ‘trench’ outlined with black tulle, lace, ribbon; and an ivory Russian sueded broadtail opera cape with hand embroidered ostrich feathers. In one instance, Dennis inventively used black Russian broadtail trimmed with ostrich feathers, to create a ‘simple’ knee length skirt. Pairing it, as he did, with a pretty ivory short sleeved blouse with black satin bow, he was able to transform that ‘uniform’ of a white blouse and black knee length skirt into something a bit more, well….interesting.
The 500 who attended the show (1,000 guests were invited), including Anna Wintour, Lorraine Bracco, Denise Rich, Liza Minnelli, and the Neil Sedakas), were treated to a well edited and fast paced lineup of beautifully tailored and expertly crafted pieces that were pared down to a very chic Parisian color palette of black, brown, and ivory, and infused with a French spirit. One could easily imagine Carine Roitfeld, the Editor-in-chief of French Vogue and the reigning Queen of Parisian Chic, wearing many of these pieces. Of course, the same can also be said of her American counterpart, Anna Wintour,
By the way, speaking of Anna Wintour, the Vogue Editor-in-chief was one of several guests who wore a touch of fur on this muggy late spring day; as if to prove that the luxurious pelt is indeed, seasonless and can be considered as a year round fabric. Anna’s narrow ivory knee length coat featured a lavish fox trimmed hem; another woman carried a Russian sable scarf in her hands; yet another was wearing Dennis’s pale lavender cashmere coat trimmed in lavender dyed Chinchilla. She told me that when she went out early in the morning, she found it to be rather chilly but agreed that later in the afternoon, it turned surprisingly warmer. However, that was apparently not enough to deter her from keeping it on.

Mongolia: Images from the Steppes
Rossi and Rossi
London, , UK United Kingdom
A photography exhibition entitled Mongolia: Images from the Steppes will be presented by London dealer Rossi & Rossi Ltd, 13 Old Bond Street, London W1, from 17 May to 9 June 2006. This exhibition is part of the year-long festivities marking the Œ800th anniversary of Mongolian Statehood‚ which is being celebrated this year by Mongolian communities all over the world. 2006 marks the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Great Empire created by Genghis Khan in 1206. Twenty-five photographs, taken in Mongolia by renowned Italian photographer Enzo Obiso in the summer of 1991 at a time when Communist dictatorship had only just ended, will be on display at Rossi & Rossi Ltd, 13 Old Bond Street, London W1.
The immense spaces of the Mongol steppes are transformed through the artist‚s lens. Against the background of a static landscape, clouds, horses, motorbikes and people create a visual dialogue that connects man to his inner world, to history and to nature. The results are metaphysical images of great intensity, suspended between external and internal space, capturing the deep sensibilities of a world in transformation.
Enzo Obiso was born in Sicily in 1954 and studied photography at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Turin. Based in Turin, he has been exhibiting since 1974 in commercial and public galleries. His work has been included in various public collections, such as the Galleria Nazionale d‚Arte Moderna in Rome, the FNAC collection in Parigi and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin. At the centre of his work is the human being represented through landscape, places, objects and the body.
Anna Maria Rossi founded Rossi & Rossi Ltd in London in 1985 and was joined by her son Fabio in 1988. Together they have established a reputation as leading dealers in Indian and Himalayan art, early Chinese and Central Asian textiles and works of art. Their clients include distinguished private collectors as well as many major museums worldwide, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Tokyo National Museum and the Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney. Dealing from an elegant 18th century townhouse in the centre of fashionable Mayfair, the gallery has published a number of scholarly works and regularly stages specialist and groundbreaking exhibitions in London and New York.
Call for Artists: International Summer MFA Program
Transart Institute, O.K. Center for Contemporary Art
Linz, , AT Austria
Transart Institute today announced the program for this years' summer residency. The ten workshops and seminars bring together students and faculty from more than a dozen countries spanning three continents. Workshops focus on Transparency, Memory, Voice, Documentation and Science in Art. Seminars investigate politics and art after 9/11, art as research and trans-disciplinary thinking across art, technology and cultural theory. New Location, New Cooperation!
Transart Institute has entered a cooperation with the O.K. Centrum in Linz, Austria. The renown O.K. Center for Contemporary Art, an innovative agency combining artist residencies, symposia and performances with museum level exhibitions including components of the Ars Electronica festival, will be the new home of the annual Transart Institute residency in July and August. Classes, performances, lectures, yoga, and student's graduate exhibitions will all take place in the award-winning architectural structure.
The socially-aware, experimental, process-oriented approach of O.K. Centrum is highly synergetic with TI's innovative strategy of a student-centered, self-created educational program for independent thinking and original artistic praxis.
Low-Residency Program
Balancing work, family and jobs is one of the most difficult challenges artists face. If students can establish a good, solid artistic praxis with the support of the program in their own environment, chances are the praxis will continue after the program. Students can come back after graduating to get a creative surge, receive feedback on their work and keep their praxis and contacts alive.
Each student creates his/her own educational experience by executing individually tailored art and research projects. The residencies provide common ground with a tightly interwoven pattern of lectures, critiques, seminars and creative workshops.
Transart Institute
Transart Institute, in cooperation with Danube University Krems, offers an international low-residency graduate art program leading to a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in New Media. Students create their own course of study working on art and research projects off-site with the support of faculty and self-chosen artist mentors. The independent study periods are complemented by three intensive summer residencies where lectures, critiques, seminars, performances, exhibitions, and workshops take place on-site in Europe as well as by optional winter residencies in New York. The low-residency format allows continuing a professional life while participating in the program. Main goals of the program are: Change and the development of an informed and vital artistic praxis. Some scholarships available.
Genres include: Animation, Architecture, Curatorial work, Cyber Art, Film / Video, Game Design, Graphic Design, Installation Art, Interactive Art, Interdisciplinary Art, Performance Art, Photography, and Sound / Music
{art} BOK: A Video Installation by Peter Van Heerden
KZNSA - KwaZulu Natal Society of Arts
Durban, , ZA South Africa
Peter Van Heerden is a performance artist living and working in Cape Town. He completed his Masters Degree (Cum Laude) at the University of Cape Town Drama Department in 2004. He has presented live art installations at various venues, including the Grahamstown Festival, with a controversial and acclaimed work titled "So is ën os gemaak". This work was followed by Bok, commissioned by the KZNSA Gallery for YAP, which were also performed for the FNB Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg earlier this year. Van Heerden is a lecturer in performance at CityVarsity in Cape Town. Van Heerden works in close collaboration with artist Andre Laubscher, and they present work under the initiative erf 81 cultural collective.
Van Heerdens work is an investigation into masculinity and identity through cathartic performance. His work is based on the notion of Saamtrek (pulling together), where the audience is participants, through their presence, in a quest for new meanings and interpretation of archetypal symbols.
Van Heerden states: Through live art installation I create necessary work - work that engages and opens new spaces that encourage communal engagement and dialogue. I accept and harness my role as a white male South African to engage in the cathartic process of resolution and reconciliation through dialogue. In order to understand our future we must unpack the past in the present.
The video installation of Bok follows the live art installation that took place earlier in 2006 in Bulwer Park, outside the KZNSA Gallery, where Van Heerden presented three performances in public, living on site for the duration of the set-up and performances. The work presented for this phase of the project is a consolidation of the material and visual residue of Bok. This consists of video material garnered from the research phase of the project, where Van Heerden and Laubscher enacted mock executions at significant Anglo Boer War and apartheid sites in the Eastern Cape, as well as documentary footage of the performances in Durban and Johannesburg.
On the last day of the installation Van Heerden and Laubscher will perform a closing ceremony, which encompasses a ritual. Starting at 6:00 am in the morning they will start with a closed performance of executions in the exhibition space, repeating the performance every six minutes ñ the average estimate of time a South African child is abused. This will conclude after twelve hours at 6:00pm, when the public will be invited to attend a closing ritual and engage with the artists in-situ.
Interested members of the public are invited to meet with Van Heerden and Laubscher at 6:00pm on Saturday 27 May 2006 at the KZNSA Gallery and witness the closing ceremony.

Cordoba, , AR Argentina
The art critic Gabriel Gutnisky rated a "tenacious palette " the work of this cordobese painter that adds to her remarkable career in our city, in the country and abroad an "acknowledgement to her persistent plastic task of increasing the value of the historical and cultural heritage of our city". Matilde Hubaide was selected in many occasions in the National Hall of Painting; she won the Prize in Rosario and received numerous mentions and distinctions in exhibition halls and in various contests.
Her subject matter includes interiors, still life works, rural and urban landscapes ˆ our historical heritage ˆ churches, chapels, monuments, especially the work of the Jesuits, and also portraits and the outstanding series made in ink and captured at the very moment of action from prominent performers of the world of music, lyric, the stage and the literature.
During her journeys abroad and to neighboring countries, she expressed her feelings in the series JOURNEY NOTES (drawings) which deserved laudatory comments on the part of the specialized critic.
"With the energy and chromatic intensity that distinguishes her among the artists of her generation, in synthesized versions and contrasted against reality, in control of the pleasure and the exploration of senses" we present today this collection of landscapes of our mountain ranges

Thievery Corporation
Thievery Corporation has teamed up with Urge to launch their new remix album Versions on May Wednesday, May 17th. Versions will be available digitally exclusively at www.urge.com. Due to legal restrictions, the album will NOT be available on iTunes or eMusic. Urge will be the ONLY place to get the album digitally for the first month.
Many of you have inquired why the album will not be available on iTunes. Simply put, iTunes will not allow us to put the album up for sale as a full album download only. We cannot put the album up any other way since, as this is a remix record, we do not control the rights to the individual songs, as we would on a Thievery Corporation artist album. Its certainly not our choice, but its a policy that we cant change despite many, many attempts. If you wish to register your discontent with this, please contact Apple directly: http://www.apple.com/itunes/
Thievery Corporation will hit the road for a series of live shows this summer around the US
