LISTENING PARTY 8-9 WITH LIGHT SNACKS AND BEVERAGES
$8 in advance/$10 at door, tickets available at the bar
After a yachting love story and a fishing trip in deep water, it's now the
time to warm up since the weather is getting cooler. Trigger is providing a
third stop over to touch the atmosphere with a soft and deep wind with a
brand new fledgling album from Cravo e Canela, 'Free Radical'. Free Radical
was conceived through collaborative efforts and is a journey in the
imaginative musical universe of Miguel Graça and Trevor Walker. The project
was compiled over three years of sonic experiments with no clear direction,
the only goal to make music. Free Radical was produced mostly by Miguel
Graça, Canadian producer worldly renowned and respected for his tropical
deep house sets and his warm hypnotic rhythms.

DVD RE-RUN REVIEW: Living in the Moment, Nine Years Later; Linklater's Lovers Reunite in "Before Sunset"
Romance junkies of the world arise. If you were hooked on Richard Linklater 's 1994 "Before Sunrise," the ballad of a 24-hour love affair between American Jesse and Frenchwoman Celine, your moment has come. You now get to see what happened after the couple's wrenching farewell in a train station, when they vowed to meet again in Vienna in six months. And I don't think you'll be disappointed, to judge by the warm reception "Before Sunset" received at its world premiere at the 2004 Berlinale ( Warner Independent Pictures opens it on Friday).
This festival fave struck a chord for several reasons. It's an anomaly: since when do indie films spawn sequels -- and especially from the director of indie icon "Dazed and Confused?" Sequels are for Bruce Willis and der Arnold; they're economically driven, as the ever mellow Linklater said at the press conference; while "this film we're doin' for ourselves primarily." "Sunset" also scratches the itch to know what becomes of people -- and what became of these particular beautiful young people as yet unscarred by disappointment and missteps. It caters to our naïve need to spin forward the plot: DID Ethan Hawke 's Jesse and Julie Delpy 's Celine meet again in Vienna as promised? And it taps into such consuming questions as, Can you build a life out of a one-night stand? Does anyone out there still believe in romantic love?

"Brother to Brother" And then Some: Rodney Evans Flashes on the Harlem Renaissance by Brandon Judell
Name three films in the last decade where the hero was intelligent, black, gay, and could paint. How about one flick with an African-American homosexual that wasn't an offensive comedy? Well, there were a few. You'll just have check your indie guides for hours to discover them.
Thankfully, Rodney Evans, the recipient of the Independent Feature Project's Gordon Parks Award for his screenplay "Brother to Brother," has added another one to the guides by directing his acclaimed screenplay.
The story hinges on the sensitivities of Perry (Anthony Mackie), a young man thrown out of his house for getting it on with a guy in his family's basement. Now, not only does he have to cope with his queerness and pay the rent, Perry is figuring out what it is to be black and proud. Can these two identities mesh into a happy whole? They can once the put-upon collegiate meets Bruce Nugent (Roger Robinson), a survivor of the Harlem Renaissance. Soon the wise old man's memories of Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes become Perry's. Yes, being queer, black, and having to study doesn't have to be a curse. Get out the party hats.
Parisian pop-modernists Phoenix....
The Phoenix live experience is an irresistible mix of punchy rock'n'soul that sparkles with invention and defies modern rock's formulaic crunch. To commemorate these dates, a 10-track live album Thirty Days Ago, recorded during their Scandanavian tour in September, will be released digitally in the U.S. on November 30.

Illustrations from Bucky's Storybook
The recently released children's book from PublishAmerica earlier this summer titled "Bucky's Storybook - Critter Tales From The Really Cool Ranch" will be featured in an art exhibit hosted by the Chapel Hills Barnes and Noble Bookstore for the month of November, 2004.
The artwork, from the book's illustrations, was created by the author, Shellie Renee Kirby, from photographs of the horses and other animals from "The Really Cool Ranch". The book is based on a BLM Mustang owned by the author and his hilarious antics and trouble-making talents he put to use on his humans and fellow animals at the ranch. The illustrations feature several animals also owned by the author and the horse, appropriately named "Buckaroo", AKA "Bucky".
Twelve framed pictures, taken directly from the book, will be on display in the cafe area of the Barnes and Noble Bookstore.

You may consider Grant Marshall, a.k.a. Daddy G as spiritus rector of what has historically become known as the "Bristol Sound“. It´s that laid back sound that breathes dub, reggae, funk, disco and hip hop, represented by protagonists like Massive Attack, Smith & Mighty, Tricky and Portishead. A sound that left its global traces for more than one and a half decades. And Daddy G is its spiritus rector because he was one of the founders of the Wild Bunch Sound System, out of which later Massive Attack emerged. Besides Mushroom and 3-D, Daddy G was both one of the core members of the group as well as one of the group´s main voices.
Way before being part of a band though, Daddy G was known as a DJ. As a ten year old he already recorded mix tapes, inspired by the DJ boyfriend of his older sister. 1980 he was one of the youngest Bristol DJs, quickly establishing his name as a synonym for an eclectic music style. At the parties at which G played, one could always hear the newest in disco, fresh punk funk from NY, the first rap imports as well as soul and dub reggae. When the Wild Bunch Sound System was founded, Daddy G already was a local celebrity. His DJ sets were not only legendary because of their selection and his mixing skills, but because he rocked the microphone as versatile as the wheels of steel.
For his mix for the newest installment of the "DJ-Kicks“ series, Daddy G dug deep in his record case. "Rock steady baby," sings Aretha Franklin on the penultimate cut of this mix. Rocksteady, of course, was also a Jamaican style of the late 1970s, essentially a kind of slowed-down ska. For Daddy G, reggae is the source. This mix kicks off with two tracks from the legendary Studio One stable, including his "most favourite record ever", Willie Williams' 'Armagideon Time', and proceeds with 'Non Non Non' by Melaaz, a languid French version of a Studio One classic. Barrington Levy's 'Here I Come' is a dancehall classic, Foxy Brown's sassy 'Oh Yeah' is based on an old Toots & the Maytals tune, and Johnny Osbourne's 'Budy Bye' is an early slice of electronic reggae.
The Meters are included with a song for Daddy G's daughter, Ava. That and Aretha's 'Rock Steady' square the reggae-soul circle, the latter in the shape of Danny Krivit's inspirational but extremely hard-to-find edit. This isn't the only rarety on the mix. 'Aftermath' comes in Tricky's original white label version. 'I Against I' was recorded by Massive Attack with Mos Def for the Blade 2 soundtrack and never released anywhere else. Badmarsh and Shri's 'Signs' appears, like several other tracks, in limited edition dubplate form.
It´s obvious that Daddy G included many tracks by his original crew, Massive Attack: Apart from 'I Against I' and a rare mix of 'Karmacoma', Daddy G has also included their groundbreaking remixes of Les Negresses Vertes and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan ("the most enjoyable mix we've ever done"), finally ending up with Paul Oakenfold's subtle mix of 'Unfinished Sympathy'.
There are DJs, that get their kicks from playing out obscure white labels that no one knows. And then there´s DJs who simply enjoy playing their favourite records. Daddy G belongs to the latter. On his mix for the DJ-Kicks series he simply says: "These tracks are always in my box.“
"Daddy G creates a beautifully kaleidoscopic mix of old-school lovers rock, funky soul and an eclectic array of sonic surprises to reveal the true impetus of Massive Attack's panoramic and singular sound." - URB Magazine, Oct 2004

For more information on the film visit www.dj-film.com.
The film has played in six film festivals over the past few months. The Dubrovnik International Film Festival in Croatia was the world premiere and the documentary recently picked up the award for Best Documentary music in film category from the Wine Country Film Festival in Napa Valley. The film was tabbed “A rock solid documentary”, by MicroCinema Magazine. The review also claimed, “’Put the Needle on the Record’ is a perfect example of documentary filmmaking at its absolute best!”
First time director Jason Rem filmed the events of the annual Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida and used that setting as a backdrop to examine many aspects of electronic dance music, DJ's and club culture. The film includes global and historical perspectives as well as interviews and music from many of the top and rising players in the industry.
A review by the Hawaii International Film Festival claimed “Covering the event would be entertaining in itself, but director Jason Rem infuses his coverage with a hyper-kinetic history of electronic music that gets deeper into your head than a 12 inch pneumatic drill that you beg to keep spinning.” They continued. “Ken Burns' JAZZ this is not. An engaging piece of filmmaking from beginning to end, PUT THE NEEDLE ON THE RECORD is more than just a document of a festival; it is an event to savor in wonderment.”
